First category for me Prof. I'd like to one day put myself into maybe the third category but I can't see my financial position changing enough to allow me to do so.

Category 2 for me, & there I'll stay (if I want to stay married).

Great category descriptions, BTW!

... too many guitars to properly maintain so only a few get regularly played ...

Wow, does THAT hit a nerve. 40+ in the house right now incl. electrics and ukuleles. I play THREE of them regularly.

Nice of you to have 3 categories above mine (Category 3) even though no one has admitted to being in the top 2 yet. I think we might have a few up there.
I mentioned something about guitar collectors to SWMBO last night and she said, "like Dave?" At least she doesn't think I'm in his category yet. I also play more than half mine on a regular basis. Now that the days are getting shorter, I hope to bring that up to 3/4.
We just need to be a better support group. My wife's stepmom arrived last night and gushed over all the new redecorating since she was here the last time. We need people to come over and gush over our guitar collections and inquire about our plans for them.

Category 2 for me.

Currently have 9 and play 3-4 regularly

I will probably stay in that range, space plus it bothers me that a couple of really nice guitars don't get that much playing time.

I may cut one loose this fall.

Which three?

I didn't quite fit into the description of catagory 3. I've got 13 guitars, 4-5 get played regularly, but most of the others still get played.

And I may be the only person here who's wife tells him not to sell any guitars when he wants a new one. Almost wish I could easily sell some....

I once was #3 and on my way but I have cut back to category # 2.
If I could I'd be totally down the road and around the corner collector. Old guitars have a life of their own and, like a classic car, are an investment that is enjoyable every day to possess. If your lucky enough to learn to play them well, hey that just makes the investment all the more enjoyable.
I envy/admire the guy's who have been collecting for a long time. I have my own tastes and desires but it seems prices have been climbing out of this world these past years for the real early classics.

I have two guitars right now; I'd like to have more but my race car needs about 6 or 7 thousand dumped into it for next year.

Racing is the process of turning money into noise. If I hadn't made so much noise over the years I could have bought numerous guitars which I would be able sell and use the money to retire early..lol

Hmmm based on today... I'm in the 51-99 range, but.... I have elements of all the over 50 categories as I am nuts and broke, however due to moving, it's all pretty organized. When I moved there was 125 guitar boxes, with several guitars (electric) two-to-a-box.

If anyone is interested 125 boxes of guitars takes up 16 running feet of a standard 63' size trailer. So next time you see a full 63' trailer on the highway, picture 1/4 of it, wall-to-wall and floor-to-roof as guitars.

11 - 25 :p Got one amp in the mail (ETA tomorrow) one amp on eBarf [anyone?]
Got a dedicated link on my Firefox for "eBarf Ovation"...
Have amps and effects that I never use, and guitars that I rarely play (but can't bear to sell).
Have bought other brands (going through a BC Rich phase).
And I have a dedicated Guitar Money account on PayPal.

I think I would fit alot of the descriptions in the high brackets, but lack of funds keeps me Humble. :D
[so does lack of talent!]

~Get off the Damn computer and play your Damn Guitars!

~(I have four guitars in stands, and have not played today!!! I will do that NOW!)

Well, with all equipment counted I could easily fall into 4 but I went with 3 with the caveat that I have paired my "guitar" collection down to a manageable level and now routinely play almost all of them ;) .

Category 1: SWMBO feels a couple seconds worth of guilt for buying new clothes.
Category 2: SWMBO redecorates in order to maintain big spender position, but claims that money was spent on "us" so it doesn't offset guitar purchases.
Category 3: SWMBO gets new Porsche, but it doesn't offset guitar purchases because she lets you drive it (only if you wash it before and after).
Category 4: SWMBO wants smaller house, requiring disposal of guitars, but keeping craft room.
Category 5: Guitar collection liquidated along with SWMBO and her Porsche to pay for divorce.

I think I'll try to stay in category 3. Seems like the most bang for the buck.

You did say guitars... CAT IV. Just call it 'therapy'.

Ummm...
Yes, I know exactly what I have and where they are.
No, I have not played/plugged-in all of 'em. A couple (non-Os) are still in the factory 'wrap'.
Yes, over half are Ovations. Only one bought new and all of the A/Es I have played at least for a while.
No, there is no end in sight.
Yes, I'm 'sick'!

I put myself in the 26-50 as most fits. However I do play every guitar at least once every week, including the electrics and the basses. Maybe not for hours but enough to keep the top remembering what it's supporsed to be doing. I have a dedicated music room, but it is there as a place to make music, not store guitars I'm hoarding. But I am out of room. Again.

My vote goes to the first category but like Beal, it's not completely accurate.
From my first O in the early 70's, they were all destined to be working guitars. Minus the brief stints in the especially hard times, I've spent my life as a working musician.
I've ended up with a few wonderful instruments, special to me at least.

Having said all that, were I a wealthy musician, I could easily fit in the 100 and over category.
Especially since I discovered the OFC.

In the last four months alone I'd have bought the OFC Adamas, 07C, Koa 12 fret, and 08C from Al.
The Long neck that came up a few weeks ago, the Bearclaw 12 string, 97 Parlor, '69 Glen Campbell 12-String...
This place is sick.
I love it.

I'm Category 2--and being single, I don't really have anyone to be obeyed or pampered should I ever decide to acquire another. (Of course, there are negatives aspects to that as well as the freedom....) I have as many as I have room for, and am limited more by physical issues (one naggy shoulder) when it comes to adding to the herd.
So, right now, there's
6 Ovations (Gertrude, Jewel, Rosa, Johanna, Jazzey and Ivory)
2 Guilds (Jacqui and Gilda)
1 Steinberger bass (Sugar)
and...a whole headful of wishful thinking.

Cat 2, but headed for Cat 1. Someday back to Cat 2. There's just not enough time to play more than a few guitars regularly, and there's no room to display more than about 5 or 6 instruments. I can't see having dozens of guitars sitting in cases and never being enjoyed.

Think about this . . . almost 40% of the responding membership have over 10 guitars. 23% of the members have in excess of 25 guitars. Most of these guitars are Ovations. There are, what, something approaching 7,000 members represented here? Do the math. Somebody needs to present this information to Ovation's or Kaman's board. There just has to be some way we can leverage this data.

I wasn't even going to vote but had to to see the results. Some of you are, a little obsessed
When I first came here I only had one, as of tommorow I will be moving from cat 1 to cat 2 as I'm picking up another.
If I can st5ay in this category I think I can stay content.

Cat 2 here...have approached Cat 3..but thinned down to those that I play fairly often. SWMBO has not pulled the one in, one out, on me. I guess I am somewhat self regulated in that respect.

TRboy has promised to show me how to play more than one at a time...if that happens, I may have to add a coupla more.

I don't feel right having guitars that I don't play. Now that I have my new classical, I'll be parting with my old one. I'm even thinking about selling my Ibanez hollowbody. I haven't been playing it much, and that guitar deserves to be played every day. Both of my Morgans get played, but in rotation. We play a lot of bluegrass down here at the shop, and after a couple of months I switch them out to keep the tops moving. The only reason I don't sell one of them is that they don't make that model anymore and SOMEDAY they are going to be worth a small fortune. The old Yamaha is the "shop guitar", the one that gets played if someone shows up who forgot to bring their own. My black Legend gets played every morning with coffee. It's still the guitar I write with. And my Deering banjo gets played every day. Saturday was crazy busy in here, and I didn't get to play it all day. When closing time came, I locked the door and sat and played for half an hour before I went home. Wouldn't have been able to sleep if I hadn't!

Your 4-10 range leaves lots of leway, I feel they need to be played and played well so right there I know its going past that time line.

Cat 3 for me. All of 'em have been played out and all of 'em get played, though not necessarily out, at least once a month. SWMBO knew about all of 'em - er, eventually.
