Location: belfast northern ireland | Hi folks,
I've just seen an Ovation for sale in the same market that I got a Matrix in about a month ago. It's an Ovation Glen Campbell 12string with a brown bowl and slotted headstock. It has severe laquer cracking from the back of the bridge to the edge at the bottom. It's a natural finish but slightly darker than my Matrix. When I enquired as to the price I was shocked to find that it was for sale at £499 UK!! It does play well, although decidedly grotty and a little lacking in bass. Given that the Matrix cost me about an eighth of what they want for this one, do you guys think this is a good price for this type of instrument, or are they cashing in on the artist in question and the Ovation name. Any advice would be deeply appreciated.
Regards,

Location: Scotland | Dave, that price depends on a number a factors. A Uk dealer currently has an electro GC 12-string advertised at £1699 but he is obviously on some strong medication. If the guitar you've seen is non-electro, and the cracks are in the finish only, without an original case, I'd pay maybe £200-300. A cased electro in similar condition about £400. Good to excellent condition about £500. These are private rather than dealer prices, so add about £150-200 respectively from a dealer, and remember it's always worth haggling. The value of a Matrix should not really be compared to other Ovations of the era, as it was intended as an entry level instrument & has a number of unique design & construction features. If the guitar you've seen is an electro, is structurally sound, ie the cracks are cosmetic only, and has a case, the price is OK.

Location: belfast northern ireland | Thanks Paul. The guitar in question was a non-electro with no case, so I'll try a bit of haggling and see what happens. I'll keep you posted as to the outcome. £1699 wow! thats some strong medication for sure. The sad thing is though, there are those among us on even stronger medication who will pay these prices thus encouraging such craziness. I take your point regarding the comparison with the Matrix, it's just my inexperience in all things Ovation showing through. However since joining the site, I'm learning more and more each time I visit.
Thanks again for your help.
