My wife and I will be going to the Mexico Riviera Maya next Wednesday for some much needed R+R. While we are down there I would like to find one of those big, fat guitars that is played in the mariachi bands but I don't know what to ask for or where to look. How about it all you worldly travelers, anyone know the name of this type guitar? Also is there any hassle getting one thru customs? I've been practicing drinking adult beverages this week in preparation for the all inclusive vacation. I think in a few more days I'll be ready as I can tell I've gotten better at drinking just this week. Practice does make you better.

"... oh sure, I could come home from a stressful day at work and play my guitar, but then my wife wouldn't compliment me on how my drinking has improved..." :p
Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but it's a start...

good idea bill. better yet since you are a man of leisure now, come with them.

our drummer and base player are mexican and they would be a good source for info and actual guitarron contacts. get ahold of me if i can help. drop me an email and i'll give you my address and phone. remember to forget time and only drink what comes in a bottle while you are here.

jayroc-------customs is ok unless you fill the guitar with dawg nip. i brought back 7 musical instruments to the usa once and told them i collected them. all of them were different so they accepted my answer. they are so hung up on drugs at the border they don't even ask about the other stuff anymore.

Thanks for the help guys, now I know what to look for anyways. Where I'm going is 1 hour south of Cancun across from Cozumel. If I was close to where you are Russ I would love to stop in and listen to that band of yours. How do you like Puerto Vallarta and is this a place that we would enjoy?

No way, I just turned all the burros and mules loose on the New Mexico plains. Rounding them up and finding those little kegs they show on St. Bernard rescue dogs to put on them for the necessary tequila, then finding 50 charro outfits for the members, and a mariachi band to accompany the procession, and finding what's left of Onate's sheep and cattle to drive back to Mexico to eat on the way, no way. Have you seen the price of tequila lately? Unless the factory has moved it's production to Mexico by spring, but I don't think an Ovation with a guitarron back made of wood is quite the same as the plastic ones, NAFTA or no NAFTA.

do i like it here? read some of my earlier posts. would you like it here? if you are laid back and open minded you will probably really like mexico. just don't expect it to be like the states.

cancun is a major tourist area with lots of nearby adventures. lots of mayan ruins and natural beauty. the ocean is as beautiful as it gets. primo beaches, crystaline water, great snorkeling, excellent fishing. puerto vallarta is similar but has mountains that come down to the sea and it is much more jungly and tropical. remember that this is hurricane season and that things can get exciting quickly. also as in any tourist town almost any country, watch out for cons and stickey fingers. in 26 years of travel deep into mexico, i can sincerely say i feel MUCH safer here. HAVE FUN AND LET US ALL KNOW HOW THE GUITARRON HUNT TURNED OUT.

IF ANY OFC MEMBER PLANS A TRIP TO THIS AREA PLEASE COME VISIT.

I ALREADY PROPOSED AN OFC FIESTA HERE IN A MUCH EARLIER POST. THE OFFER IS STILL GOOD.

With descriptions like that of the beauties of where you're at, we will all end up in Mejico and it will be a swap of nationalities. Although I'm sure most Mejicanos in Estados Unidos are here for economic reasons and also love their country for the reasons you describe. I enjoyed the times I visited Baja for all the same reasons. Just saw the LA weather news and it looks like you are on the edge of a storm, hope it doesn't get too bad.

With today's acoustic sessions being done by all the bands, I've been waiting for a guitarron to show up on an acoustic session. Maybe someone here can start a tradition.

Hey Russ, if I do find one of these guitarrons what should I expect to pay? This is actually or 3rd trip to Mexico, 2 times before to Cancun were great. We went to see the mayan ruins of Chichen Etsa both times, will see Tulum this time. We had talked of going to where you are Russ and maybe next trip will make it there, sure sounds nice.

before i qualify for presidente i need to take a few courses in corruption and unaccountability at the local community college.

we often joke here about the gringos who move here and the mexicanos who head north in search of el dorado. i guess if i was broke with a hungry un shod family i would try to find it too. it's often hard to see life from their perspective.

jayrock---the price range might be from $100 for a playable souvenier to perhaps a grand for a really primo one. you won't find that kind of instrument (high end) in a tourist shop. seek out a real music store. if you strike out, i am in los angeles every three months----maybe i can help you out.

Well tomorrow morning is the big day, we'll leave out of here to St Louis airport around 4am. Thanks for your help and hope to find a real music store while I'm down there. I'll be taking lots of digital pictures while I'm there and maybe some I can share if you like. Wish me luck!

Good luck, and enjoy all the things that are different than midwestern America. Look for the signs of the centuries of civilizations that have lived in Mexico while we were migrating from wherever. As Russ said, there are cheap souviniers and, if you make an effort and look, there are quality products. If you see a mariachi or trio who are good, look at what they are playing, Mexican instruments generally are not very flashy, but the sound is good. The best comparison I can make is to the American 1930's mandolins and guitars with super wood working but not a lot of trim other than intricate wood bindings etc.. My experiences were over 20 years ago so listen to Russ for today's reality.

"remember that this is hurricane season and that things can get exciting quickly."

i wasn't kidding when i mentioned it. kathleen and i have been through a couple of storms down here in the tropics that left entire coastal areas without power, water and phone for almost 2 weeks. and there often is no way out by vehicle as the roads and bridges are not even up to moderate weather. at the height of one storm in the mid 80's hundreds of people were on their roofs and livestock was being tumbled like hunks of styrofoam in the raging torrents that were roads before the storm. clean up is handled 3rd world style, shovel and wheel barrow.

i hope jayroc got his guitarron early. he may need it for a life raft!!!!! any body keeping an eye on hurricane isadore or hear from our amigo? this one could be a real frog strangler if that big cell to the south joins forces with it. i think even you will get some rain from this one bill. i don't remember how long jayroc was staying but it might be longer than he planned if the cells join and isadore stays over warm water. i think he had a near miss and hope itstays that way.

Hey Russ, we're watching it. Of course we're watching it from Connecticut. My wife says it might be coming and we better get home to bring in the deck furniture. Sounds good to me, anything to get back south of the Mason-Dixon!

Sounds like Dixie never changes, in 1953 I (from Ohio) was called a yankee in Virginia, went to Connecticut in 1954 and was asked by every girl I met what part of the deep south I came from. The only reward there was that they all went to Virginia Beach in the summer and wanted to meet me, to them a native southerner no matter what I said, there in the coming summer. They called on their way down to Virginia Beach, I'll let you finish the story as you would imagine it should end.
