Location: SoCal | In my never humble opinion, this was maybe the best looking guitar Ovation ever made (ok, I'll qualify that and say that Custom Legends and older Adamii are in that catagory as well). If I didn't own my 1537 Elite, I'd be figuring a way to buy this guitar!

Location: SoCal | Actually, the guitar on the cover of the book was a specially made commemorative guitar. Ovation also made a mandolin and a Viper in the same configuration.
I realize that this is petty, but I like the 87 Collectors better in that the bottom points of the leaf epaulets point inward instead of outward. I just think it looks better. Told you this was petty. Man I'm tired. |

Location: RI. That small State out East | Wow... That is one nice guitar. Did Ovation ever put 6 or 8 of the "best" on a poster? I have a Martin Guitar poster that has One large 3 medium and 4 small pic's of what someone thought to be the "best" of Martin.
I think Ovation can start selling / showing off it's history. I think "we" still act / market like a new guitar company.
This 87' is a model.
The current marketing of this company makes me squint.

Location: SoCal | Did you really bid on this? Are you the current high bidder? Send me an email. I no longer have your email address. Long and pathetic story regarding my computer. Also, I'd love to see a pic of your Hamer Newporter. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | This is one of the better ones. The Book guitar was a bit moflashier, inlay around the peghead but I think I like this one better. It's stood the test of time. There were about 20 of the 87's made with bearclaw tops, those were stunning! It remains the lowest production for a C-Series, less than 1000 and that includes 100 or so black ones.
As far as a poster, great Idea. Someone want to run with it? Don't be waiting because you will be |

Location: NJ | george I hate you I had a newport 12 but had to sell it to a customer. I wanted so much for him not to love it but he did. I also sold me fender electric 12 that I had for 18 years and never played and never really liked. Maybe I am just not an electric 12 kind of guy.
I jammed with the guy I sold the newport 12 to last week and It is magnificent that damn guitar soundd like a piano.
some times you just let the wrong guitar get away |

If you really want to know the truth, I had never played the Hamer 12 until the day I bought it. The salesman who sold it to me is a Hamer Fan Club member and had it set up so sweet that even tho I am all thumbs, (moodypi can attest to that fact) I was able to fake enough to make him(and me) believe I was a player. Or then again, maybe he didn't want to embarass me by taking it back and putting it back on the wall.)It is the ONLY guitar to play the Jerry Reed Stump Water lick to Southern Nights. Lordy how I love those Southern Nights! George |

That sounds like the Jerry Reed lick that Glen Campbell said on one of the Country Homecoming shows it took him 3 months to get down. I suspect that might impress anyone selling you a guitar and on a 12 string it should sound awesome.

I learned the Southern Nights lick that Ken has on the GC Goodtime Hour site first. Thought I was going to have to have hand surgery before it was all over. About 2 weeks ago a friend gave me the Jerry Reed "Stumpwater" lick which is the last eight steps and is easier to play than Ken's version. You can see Glen play that version if you stop/start the "GC With The South Dacota Symphony" DVD. I have the TAB for it if there's anyone that wants it. You gotta have that lick if you wanna play Southern Nights. Yeah! |

Many thanks once again for telling us about the '87 Collector's on eBay! What a terrific find! Only one other bidder, and he was gentleman enough to e-mail me and congratulate me for winning the bid. What a beauty. Rest assured, I will post pictures and give a full report here on its' playing qualities...you know that deeeep bowl is gonna be wretched man! Without the Ovation Fan Club this probably would not have happened for me. I think I'm gonna cry. George |

Waiting to hear how it plays, I just got a good look at it tonight and it is definitely a beauty. I think I saw one of the mandolins on the Grand Ole Opry and mentioned it in a post and dubyatoo pointed out it was 1987 Collectors with the abalone trim.
