You'll never get a true acoustic sound using an electric guitar amp. Electric guitar amps have speakers which are designed to emphasise midrange & cut high frequencies, which is pretty much the opposite of the ideal for a good acoustic sound. You can get a useable electro-acoustic sound from an electric amp for use in a band setting but it won't be particularly natural or convincing for much else. Which model Peavey amp is it? Some have semi-parametric midrange EQ which can help.

Buy a Crate CA125 on e-bay. They can be had for around 300.00. The newer ones have the digital effects(personally wouldn't use them, but they are fun). I have a CA60, and am amazed at the quality of acoustic sound you can acheive! CA112 has one 12 inch driver with a peizo horn, the CA125 has two 10 inch drivers with peizo horn. More importantly the freguency cutting controls pretty much eliminate all feedback.

I have also liked the sound of Peavy's KB series amps, but they are less versatile than the Crate acoustic series.

Trace-Elliot's "Trace Acoustic" line of amps also have a really nice ability of conveying the natural acoustic guitar sound as well.
