....I will be shortly looking for a used Gibson. It would be silly for me to look for a custom or collectible Paul. I require no frills....only the classic sound. My homework leads me to the Studio Models. From what I have gleaned from knowledgeable pro's....the older models are the better. What would you guys suggest or advise?

I've played more dodgy old Les Pauls than I have great new ones. If you can find an older guitar in your price range which is as good or better than a new guitar buy it. Don't be a slave to the "older must be better" theory, let your ears and hands decide. When it comes to Les Pauls I'm very fond of the single-cut P-90 Special. Late 70's examples of these can be had for sensible money.

Hamer Archtop, with or without F hole. Make sure it's made in USA. Can't go wrong.

I'll go with that, the few Hamers I've tried have been superb & they're cheaper than Gibson's new or used.

LMAO! Thank you for the input. I visited the Hamer website, before I posted this. I was drooling before I logged off. If their work is meticulous as they proclaim, it is certainly a HUGE consideration. Happy Thanksgiving....(KD encourages Templeman to celebrate regardless of his UK status). ;)

Les is Mor...

You really got to try each Les Paul out. When I was in the market for one, I checked out a bunch, I couldn't afford a "gold top" or some of the truly classic LP's but I did try out the Studio's and Smartwoods and I ended up getting the LP TV Jr. It played much better than all the others and it was the cheapest.
