Location: Grand Haven, MI | Alright, first and foremost i'm a dumbass. I know a lot about guitar electronics and what crap is and whatever... but i don't know TONS about ovation electrics aside from how full and amazingly kickass they sound...
but i have a small, perhaps idiotic question: What are the differences between the preacher and the preacher deluxe?
i'm lookin for a new electric and i have the chance to get my hands on eitehr of these beauties... what are their benefits and/or flaws? action, tone, playability, etc.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for your time and energy. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Same pickups in both however...
Preacher = Passive (no pre-amp), Mono/Stereo jack, chrome hardware
Preacher Deluxe = Active ELectronics, not stereo (basically same as newer breadwinners), gold hardware and pickups have Parallel/Serial switches.
Two totally different sounds, bascially same neck and body.
Bottom line... you need both. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Describe the sound.. well, I'm not sure I can. The one with the pre-amp is a little hotter, and the freq response a little wider, but it also has a different tone. In general, I don't like any of those humbucker pickups they used which is why I play Vipers, older Breadwinners and of course UKII's. They sound great clean, but I find I can't get them to "act" (sound) like a humbucker when I try to push an amp with them. However, having said that... I have used them for cutting leads, especially ones that involve a lot of high notes. When set up, the can scream better than a strat on the bridge pickup when you get past the 12th fret.
Ok... here's a description of sorts. First, I think they sound like single-coils not humbuckers, no matter what the switches are set to. They seem to have a narrow bandwidth, so much like a strat, you can achieve many sounds, but unlike a strat, none are as "rich" or "full" sounding. This focused sound is great for recording rock leads, especially ones that reside higher than the 12th fret for the most part. I find the "tone" on both to be a little nazel or midrange strong. But they each are different in that respect.
It's kind if like trying to describe the difference between two different brands of the same color red. They are different, yet the same.

i just bought a deluxe three weeks ago. a few simple differences, the deluxe is more versatile in some of the sounds you can get, even though some of the differences are very small. the deluxe does have the block inlaid abalone neck, where the non-deluxe has the dots. same body and neck woods. i personally like the deluxe, and passed up several non's waiting for one. i love it. also, the deluxe is usually worth a little more, and this should improve in the future as well.
i play mostly rythym, and find this a great sounding, mellow electric accompaniment to acoustic type music. the playability is awesome. hope this helps a little.
