Hey all, I've got a '97 Country Artist and the headstock is black. It looks a lot like an ebony overlay (and has the Ovation logo inlaid in maple), but could maybe be plastic?

As an aside, I've been re-falling for this guitar. I special ordered it and then really never played it much until lately. So much more beautiful that most other Ovations.

It's probably ebony. My Country Artis is 20 years old and has a natural wood on the headstock face. And, like you, I love this guitar.

Take a look at the link below. The headstock is completely smooth and black. Obeche looks like it's a lighter color.

Not after it's been stained black. I think the peghead veneers on the earlier guitars were walnut.

What's the deal with the black on the current Ovation headstocks? One of the things I always liked about Ovation was the pretty wood face on the headstocks. Cost cutting I guess, just like the carved brige on the Custom Legend. Thats why I am such a fan of older Ovations...Paul Hebert

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to hear what kind of wood it is. This guitar already has Spruce, Ebony, Rosewood, Maple, Mahogany, and Walnut. Obeche makes it seven different woods on this one guitar.
