I have a celebrity deluxe and a custom legend 12 string. I have just received my 12 string today(brand new). My celebrity's finish is smooth with no bracing dents, but my 12 string does. This the second 12 string they sent me. The first one they sent to me, was returned. The one they sent me today looked a little bit better than the 1st one. I can see a few lines on the top where the bracing is(about 5 lines). Can anyone explain why the Korean tops is smoother than the USA made models. Is it normal?

My celebrity has multi-soundholes my 12 string is a center soundhole. Does it have anything to do with this?

Good question, I’ve seen other newer custom legend 6 strings this way. Only if you hold them in the light just right and their all in black. What color is yours? Maybe someone like cms-man can answer this.

i have a ss pinnacle 12 string with a ply flamed sycamore top that is super stable. doesnt sound like my balladeer 12 which doesnt come close to my ss adamas 12. i guess the thinner the top the better the sound and the more it will show the bracing could be one reason. how does the elite sound?

Well i will do my best to answer. The one thing i can think of is that the Korean gitars are for all intents and purposes a ply wood top which would lend it to be more stiff. That would probably keep the braces from "coming thru"if you want to call it that. The other maybe depending on when your US model was made,we were trying different top thickness in the past year or two trying to tweak the best sound from the top.If you happened to get a "thin" top i would think that you probably feel the braces thru the top. Also a 12 string puts alot of string tension on the top and if it is thin, that could make the brace pattern "visible".The top should be .125 inches thick.About 1/8".I hope this answers something. :)

MSB,
My 12 string is black. I guess that is what I get for ordering a black guitar(oh well). I believe that it was made somewhere during the past 6 months. I ordered it from MF, but it was backordered for a month or so.

My question is:
Are all newer custom legend 12 strings like this?
Will this affect the top later on in the future?

if its' korean, it's laminate, not the same sound quality as solid top but probably more durable.

I have a 1769-AD5 that came out of the factory last summer. Its black and if you hold it up to the light just right you can see faint bracing line shadows. I personally know it came from A stock. I have several ovations and Adamas guitars and this one sounds especially good. I think that the top and the bracing should be as one to get the best sound. So I don’t have a problem with it and if any thing goes wrong down the road I know from experience Ovation will bend over backwards and do what ever needs to do to make it right.

Thanks for the reply Mike. My 12 strings sounds great. I'm keeping this one, but will never buy a black guitar again. I'll try white next time.....I'll wait until Ovation comes out with a white custom legend, or maybe I'll get an Mellisa E. 6 string.

If your thinking about white, this is a picture of my Elite 1758 and you can see faint signs of the bracing in it also.

My Elite 1537 also has brace lines. It has a natural finish. As long as it doesn't hurt anything, why worry?

MSB, your Elite is beautful! What a good looking guitar. I have a white Custom Balladeer with a black neck. I really like white Ovations. My Adamas is black, so they look good side by side...Paul Hebert

I'm not worried about it. I just thought that it might affect the top later on in the future. Do you think it might affect it in the future?

If memory serves me, my Glen Campbell 12-string also had brace marks. I bought that guitar in 1974 and haven't had any problems with the top.
