It's what's commonly called a piece of junk. It's not a prototype. It's a knock off. It might be worth $50, but I'd guess not.

The narrow-mindedness of some folks on this board amazes me. Owning a musical instrument for it's tone and playability are only two of the MANY MANY reasons to own anything. Do any of you have any idea how many people own musical instruments that don't play at all, but just collect odd Americana? I have a ton of odd, unusual, many unplayable, some playable, instruments laying around the studio, just because they are funny, or look cool, ugly, or they were just there. I have a Cello and a Violin that are in pieces. The violin sets in a corner, and one only sees it if they are maybe plugging in an amp. Kind-of-a "huh.. what's that?" reaction. My most recent find is a double-neck little elctronic toy that plays rock riffs no matter where you press on it. The "Kamen" copy is a pretty color, and probably plays, nothing wrong with that, and the NYC "odd ball" is just too damn cool, wierd, and ugly to not have hanging on a wall as a conversation piece. Geez guys, get a sence of humour and enjoy life little. Interesting props, photo elements, and just goofing around are all good uses for some of the "pieces of junk" out there. And remember too, that many of these "odd balls" were someones experiment at trying to create music, and there is NOTHING wrong with that, even if they failed, they at least tryed. Remember if someone didn't try something totally wierd and oddball, one of the MOST wierd and oddball things in Acoustic guitar history that I can think of, this board wouldn't have a reason to be here because there wouldn't be ROUNDBACK (oh the horror) guitars.

The roundback had a fairly scientific background and it worked. Collecting the world's failures is a nice idea, but not too attractive to a musician.

Miles,
Do you remember that trainwreck of a guitar on ebay awhile back that had a gate hinge holding the neck on it? It got some notoriety here on the website... I would consider that to be the kind of novelty that you speak of. This Don Ivey number is obviously trying to be passed off as an authentic Ovation and I think that kind of deliberate deception is wrong. I mean c'mon, "Kamen" vs Kaman? I emailed the person selling this one, I'll let you know if I hear back from this individual....

that Don Ivey reminds me of the last fat ,bloated and shiney days of Elvis. if i was looking for americana i'd be lookin' for the comeback with the black leather and greased up pompadour.it's a matter of taste i guess. Mr.O, i'll take the old relic and you take that pretty purple Barney guitar.

Your a musician and a collector and a curious type person who loves gadgetry. That makes you a musician, but many of us are economically challenged and therefore, can only buy what plays. It's safe for you to do these things, but if the rest of us followed suit we would provide a market for these chinguaderas.

Hey Bailey,
I understand what you are saying, and I know folks are entitled to their opinions, I just don't get the folks who slam something as ugly or horrid etc.. if they don't like it. I never heard a song that sucked, never seen a piece of crap piece of art. I have seen and heard things I don't like, but if there was a chance a human was trying to create something.... more power to them, and I will support them and encourage them. I've created some things that would probably be considered attrosities in the music instrument category... I made them when I was a kid maybe 10-15 years old. Some looked a lot worse than that Kamen thing. I could not afford or my parents would not buy me something, so I would attempt to make it. If it made any sound at all I'd be pretty proud of it. That's why I like these items. That's what I think of when I see some of these "basket cases" on eBay. I think someone probably spent many hours trying to create something. Maybe they didn't have the skill, maybe they were 10 years old, who knows. That's part of what I see as the charm. Maybe, as some have speculated, it's just a poor attempt at copying and trying to pass off junk. I don't buy a lot of these items, only ones that I connect with for some reason. My original point was that I just don't like being insulting to fellow artists. Actually I don't like being insulting at all, I don't get the point of it. If I like something, I will rave about it. If I don't... I just don't and usually don't feel qualified to make any comment on it other than that. I don't really have a problem with people ranking all over things, but my original post was just that I didn't get the venom over something that was clearly just piece of wood with strings, being sold by someone that didn't know much about it. It got the feeling it was like this guy was being treated as a criminal for cleaning out the attic, and I just thought that was wierd.

Good thinking, you are an artist, maybe that's a step above a musician. I see a visual element here that may be lacking in us aureally challanged pickers. Curiousity and an interest in that which does something is a gift that certainly isn't given to the CPA's that we know. I doubt that many of us know any CPA's.

Bailey, you know how to make me laugh. (that's a good thing, not being sarcastic)..

I'm not sure I'm an artist (or maybe I've just been dissed and I'm too dumb to know it), and actually I refer to myself as a guitarist, not a musician, but that's for a different thread. Now as far as the CPA comment goes.... uh... my mom was a CPA for 50+ years and my dad became a PA (to help my mom)after retiring from the Infernal Revenue Service after 33 years.

I'm not sure what this all means... but I'm sitting here laughing out load, hoping to not wake the other half... :)

Mr O, you said that you have never heard a song that sucked. Try the old tune "Tiptoe thru the tulips" by Tiny Tim, or just tune your radio to your local rap music station and turn up the base. If I think that something is ugly and horrid I usually don't mind saying so. I'm not one who likes to hurt peoples feelings but that is one ugly guitar. If I tried to make a guitar I'm sure it would suck and I wouldn't mind anyone saying so either. Tim

Hey Mr. O,
Lucky you... I see the bidding has stopped at $51.00.
Looks like you could be the owner of this piece of "art" for pocket change. Step up to the bar and put your money on the counter. Prove to us all that you don't think it should be a boat anchor.
Best of luck in your bidding.

No you haven't been dissed, I'm pointing out that musician's can be short sighted technicians, an artist has the broader view that you were arguing for and I'm agreeing with. Art applies to many different life styles, music being only one of them, and form shape and color and uniqueness are it's properties, so being an artist as a musician is a step above a technician.

And my comment on CPA's is no put down, when we had our computer training school, I taught accounting program use and became very familiar with the trade as I kept our books for the business. I found the accounting trade to require a concentration that might cause one to go home and find a distraction like playing guitar to unwind. By the way, I did a good enough job to avoid a lawsuit when we had a partnership dispute, my books were clean and clear and refuted any claims that we were hiding profits from our partner after she walked out owing money and the business grew.

Well I see the bidding did in fact stop at $51. Not bad, but I noticed that it is missing two strings and even I have some standards. :)

Bailey, thanks for the compliment. As far as listening to the radio, I don't get a chance to do that much around here. Radio in "our nations capital" sucks... There I guess I will say it for that. Not for the content, but for the programming. Due to geography DC stations and Baltimore stations are considered in different markets, so basically you end up with 4 rock stations that play the same 20 songs and the other genres are the same. I think the #1 radio station in the DC area is actually WTOP News, and I don't think there are ANY music stations in the top ratings. THere used to be a country station that got top billing, but I think now all the top slots belong to Howard, DOn & Mike, etc..

Well this has been a fun thread, so here's a move in another direction.... maybe delving more indepth into what different folks listen to. Currently one of the bands I produce I guess falls in the category of high-energy metal, or rap-metal. Most of the bands doing this stuff sound the same to me and my old ears, but these cats have some "it." I also produce a traditional style New Orleans Blues guy, that writes all his own stuff. Recent artists I listen to = Eminem, Cheryl Crow, Creed (although I hate to admit it for some reason), Kid Rock, Avril Lavigne, SlipKnot, Alien Ant Farm, Christine Aguilara, Disturbed and THe Dixie Chicks, No Doubt and anything Dave Grohl is doing FOO related or not. Hows that for a play-list. At any given time in my MP3 player are Blue Oyster Cult, Harry Chapin, Stone Temple Pilots, Garbage, Tori Amos and sometimes Metallica.

o.k.,i think most of us probably didn't understand where Mr.O was coming from and i admire people that have a different perspective especially when it comes to art and music. i look at and collect vintage autos (british/german) with the same passion. i appreciate the unusual, without it this planet would be quite boring. but i think Mr.O should understand that we weren't making a personal attack on the sellers/creators of these items. nor were we making a personal attack on the people that appreciate them. we were just bustin' on the shit wasting time, you know. i'm sure there's all types of people on this board with different tastes, and interests. that doesn't make them "narrowminded".i'm gonna take my ball and go home now. peace...

Hey Hakr,
I guess I do put my own twist on things... "people not knowing where I'm coming from" is nothing new for me. :) However, I did think a few comments (don't think they were from you) as directly "a personal attack on the sellers/creators of these items" and that's what I didn't get. I could have misread, as "type" doesn't always come across the way its intended, but it made for an entertaining thread anyway. I have an acquaintance in Germany who collects those cars that look like squared off VW's. They are old, and come in colors like yellow and red? I wish I could remember the name. They were quite cool.
Bailey, I tried to get into Bluegrass a little. Some friends were in a group called Kentucky Wind that became fairly popular in the 70's... I went to a few festivals too, but it just didn't click with me. Liked the instruments, admired the musicianship, but it doesn't seem to hold my interest. It looks likes its more fun to play than to listen to, but that' just an observation.

Bluegrass is like scotch, you like it or you may never like it, (I like bourbon).

I had a good friend that I worked with in San Diego that bought a new Morgan in the 70's and took the SCCA driving course at the Del Mar Race Track parking lot so he could race it. We used to drive through Rancho Santa Fe on the 2 lane cement road, and that Morgan "pillar" front end and stiff suspension was enough to induce sea sickness, but it was pretty fast as it was light for the 6 cyl triumph engine. I was a big sports car buff and went to many races at Riverside, even getting to see the original Cobra team in the 60's as they wiped out everything with drivers like Dan Gurney, Ken, The Snake (I can't think of his name he was killed a few years later, he raced the "flying shingle", a Morgan in SCCA), and Dave Donahue (who died at Indy with a bunch of good drivers). The Cobras were like stock cars in the driving techniques used, hit the corner sideways and step on it, with six carbs feeding the small V8, stepping on it produced awesome acceleration and they fed it through wide tires that would suit a dragster.
I even saw Jimmy Clark driving a Lotus 23, lapping cars in the higher classes from sheer skill, saw Steve McQueen on a road course in the desert east of San Diego testing a Porsche 508 that he raced at Sebring and won his class (his class was BIG money), he lapped everything at the SCCA race at least 3 times. The carnage at Indy kinda soured me on racing.
