Location: Jet City | Here's some video. I was goofin' with the UKII and some backing tracks.
Sorry for the bit of distortion, but I recorded with the laptop's camera and built in mic. I used my Roland acoustic amp for the vocals, it did pretty good. The backing tracks are on the stereo, and I'm playing through the Carvin.
Probably not the kinda music y'all listen to (MARK!) but like I said, I was goofin with the UKII, and what better to play on a UKII that some Zakk Wylde! Stick around for the solo though, it's pretty cool.
Oh, and I'm trying to sound like Ozzy singin' too. S'pose I should apologize for that right off too. :D

| Cool, all ya need is a little rubber bat on a string to fly past you from time to time. I am not the biggest Ozzy fan but he is one cool dude and the grinding guitar is really fun to hear you pull off with an old Ovation!
Vocals are better than I expected! Nice job! you have a fun act.

Bobbo, it's all amp until the solo. When the break hits, I hit the volume pedal to quiet, turn on the delay (Digitech PDS1002) flip to the neck pup (at half volume) do the volume swells and do the first little intro into the solo, then as it builds, I flip to the bridge pup and hit the OD (An old analog one made by Pearl... waiting on the killer OD from StephenT!). End of the solo volume goes back to zero while it echos out. Then all effect off again and back to the Carvin X100B's sound.
The rest is pretty "ghetto" to say the least. I'm getting a Ozzy vocal tone singin into my Roland AC60 acoustic amp with the built in chorus and delay going (secret to Ozzy's voice? LOTS OF EFFECTS!) The backing tracks are courtesy of Tim Chapman's post the other day. Thanks Tim! I'm just playing them through my surround system for the TV.
Recording was done with quicktime on the mac with the built in camera and mic.

Oh, I forgot, AND LEARN HOW TO PLAY.
Great job! |

It's funny, with all the hype about Rhoads, and for a long time now the presence of Wylde, I kinda miss the dark horse of the Ozzy stable: Jake E. Lee. You have some of his mojo.... He is fantastic and does it all sans whammy! |

Location: Jet City | Jack, I'm tellin' ya, you need one! I've gone through lots of electric guitars in the past 25 years, and I've never come across another guitar that can compare to the tone of a UKII, especially if you're playing a harder rock/metal style.
It'll eat a Les Paul for dinner, then a super strat or 2 for dessert.
Alex, I can play Rush all day long, but singing Geddy's parts are pretty tough. There may be one or 2 I could butcher though. I'm close to getting "Something for Nothing" down. Maybe Red Barchetta. We'll see, Geddy's a toughy.

So why do you think this guitar (or any ovation solidbody for that matter) never really caught on in the market?

Location: Boise, Idaho | Damon, I saw on the other thread that you were trying to sing like Ozzy. I thought you sounded just like him when I first saw the video, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to insult you. If you were sober when you did that, you are really talented.
Obviously, you were dead on when you said I wouldn't appreciate the music. I appreciate your skill though.

Too funny. My 17yo came home from church Tuesday, saw the stuff setup, then saw the video. His first comment was "How much wine did you drink tonight?" Then he thought I was a dork, then he thought it was cool and sent it to all his friends.
Stone cold sober I was. The cup behind me had OJ in it (no vodka even!)

Dave Mostly timing. Marketing, or a lack of it, had some play, but mostly timing. Ovation was ahead of its time in many ways, but they came out when the Les Paul and the Strat were king.
After Marketing and Timing, I think the pickups played a small part too in hindering a more broad acceptance. The few non-Ovations I bought in the day, as they were electrics, always had the caveat of "well, if I don't like the sound, I can always swap pickups". That wasn't a real easy option with Ovations. While those of us who took the plunge learned the potential of the Ovation electric sound (some like Damon mastered it) most would plug in, hear whatever it sounded like with the Vol and Tone at 10, and walk away thinking that was it.
They may not have gained a wide acceptance, but there sure are a lot of them out there.

Location: Jet City | Enjoy it! I still believe that guitar had a lot to do with me immersing myself in learning how to play. I do have some bias for sure, but I've A/B-ed it with so many different guitars over the years, and never found anything I liked as well.
That said, my workhorse was the Flying V, but it didn't have near the tone or "umph" the UKII did. I had to do a bunch of tweaking on the amps and adding pedals and such to be happy with the V, but the chicks dug it, and that's what mattered in my world then. The UKII just seemed to get the tone I was looking for every time. Effects weren't needed.

Dave I think Beal has answered that one over and over.
Right guitar, wrong decade.
