Hello,

I've got a problem that I hope maybe some of you nylon string finger-pickin' members could help me with! I just got in a '84 model #1674 Country artist shallow bowl and when I first got it I played it for a day or two with the "old" strings on. Although the wound strings showed tarnshing they sounded good with that nice "played in" tone and all the strings sounded o.k.! Well of course I removed all the strings(always change strings that way)cleaned & polished the top & lemon oiled the fret board in preparation for the new strings.
I put a set of D'Addario Pro*Art'e normal tension strings on and streched & tuned them to std pitch and the higher 3 nylon strings sounded like sh*t. Now I though that the strings could be flat, dead,or a larger diameter than before so I took the 3 nylon ones out of another set(same brand & style) and it helped some but the 3rd or G string still sounds dead!! Isn't there some kind of "trade" or "luthier" secret to make the G string sound brighter?

I found this on ebay:

What do you all think?

Sorry for the long rant-any help will be appreciated!!

Thanks - Mike

Don't fall for that nylon string secret! It's humbug. I assume it's a way to compensate the length of the G-string. There is no secret or any magic about that. Your Ovation already has a compensated bridge, so it won't help you anyway.

There is invariably a tonal imbalance with the third string on nylon sets, mostly due to the string's diameter & lower tuning tension compared to the 1st & 2nd strings. You could try experimenting with 3rd strings of different make & tension till you find something that works for you, though I've always found Pro Arte to be about the best. You may find that you notice the imbalance less as the strings settle in. The tops on Ovation Nylon guitars are built pretty heavy, too heavy in my opinion, so high or extra-high tension rather than normal tension nylon strings might improve things.

The new D'addarrio coated Pro Atre composite classical strings include 2 3rd strings, one in the new composite (Zynex, I think) and one nylon. I have a set of these on my Country Artist & I'm impressed with them.

You could also try a wound 3rd string, Savarez and I think Thomastik make wound nylon 3rds in various tensions

I have owned an ovation country artist since they were avilable for purchase in the '70's, and I have always used Savarez 520-P strings and they sound bright and balanced in their intonation. Try 'em.

I second that. I wasn't very happy with the Galli Genius strings I tried on my 1613. I switched to Salarez 520 PI and it made a world of difference.

Thanks Picker I kind of figgered it was a gimmick I tend to agree with Paul T. that they will sound better once they "settle in", also I had a local guitar guy suggest that I try high tension strings so thanks Paul for the back-up!
Steve & Bradley I appreciate your suggestion on the Savarez 520-P's I'll have to give them a try next time I restring!!
Anyone else have any suggestions-I'd love to hear 'um.
