Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Hello, I have a 1981 Pacemaker 12 string model 1115. Awesome guitar, but it is an acoustic only. Does Ovation outfit older guitars like this with a pickup and preamp? Has anyone here had this done? Can you send your guitar to the factory and have the electronics installed? Thanks...Paul Hebert | |

Yes, the factory service department will do this for you. Give them a call.
Installation of a thinline pickup is pretty easy and does not require major bridge work. If you want the tru-balance pickup it may require a whole new bridge due to the width of the pickup. Either way, you can get a nice OP24+ or newer type of preamp. Or (even more simple) if you don't want to have surgery to your bowl, just have them wire the pickup directly to the jack (could use an end-pin jack) and the use an external pre-amp of your own choosing.
Of course there are many good private repair shops that can also do this, but I would make sure you know very well the quality of their work before trusting your guitar to them. If it were me I would send it to the factory, although the shipping costs are not cheap.
