Location: NJ | The "martin" sound is a typical guitar sound that many acoustic guitarists strive for. Even Ovation used Martin as a standard.
IMHO Ovation especially the Adamas has a different tone because of the compostiion of the instrument how it is put together, placement of the sound holes etc. and this gives the guitar a different sound then the "martin" style guitars, but what do I know I just sell gear for a living.
btw my middle name is Martin, I am glad my mom did not decided to name me Adamas!!! |

Location: Radford VA | I was unaware that Ovation used the 'Martin' sound as somewhat of a standard. Is that something most guitar companies try to emulate Al(any specific that you can think of)? Just wondering. I know Martin has been around forever so it would seem almost impossible for guitar companies in one way or another not try to produce a similar sound. I wasn't knocking the 'Martin' sound (I own one). And I love it as far as sound goes... playablitiy is where it loses it's edge which is where I'm inclined to pick up the O. But I do wish I had an Adamas to compare it to! :p
And you're right it's a good thing your middle name isn't 'Adamas'! Oh the fun children could have had with that while you were growing up! |

Location: Scotland | The Martin company pretty much defined the modern (post 1920-ish) steel-string flat-top guitar in terms of it's aesthetics, construction, production methods and probably most importantly, bracing. The majority of production flat-top guitars to this day are slavish copies or slight variations on the Martin formula. If it ain't broke don't fix it. There are of course exceptions, Ovation being a prime example, despite the fact that Jim Rickard's Martin "holy grail" D45 was used as a benchmark. |

I have a Yamaki built in the 70's that matches and exceeds the Martin "sound", I have played it next to many Martins and it has blown many away as far as the deep bluegrass sound is concerned. It is, as Paul says, a total copy of a Martin, I'm sure if I took it apart it would match brace by brace a 40's or 50's Martin. However, in modern band playing all I get is it is too loud and hard to record. Today, you need to be able to plug in to the system, microphones don't cut it.
