... just having an idle 'senior moment' here; I wonder how many of you have managed to convert/influence guitar playing friends by the presence of one of your favourite Ovations? A very good friend and I have played/rehearsed/jammed together for 35 years or so and I am delighted to say that he has now acquired an 84 Collectors on my recommendation (she's a bit of a barroom brawler in that the top is cracked in a few places but she plays well :) ) and also has my Celeb 12 string on long-term loan (made overseas I know, but this was my first Ovation ever, has great action, and was definately glued together when the stars/planets were aligned correctly). He is now a firm Ovation convert...

Any thoughts?

I don't know if I have, other than my daughters who both have O's that they picked out. One of my daughters has directly influenced two of her friends to buy Ovations, and she has sold at least two customers at Guitar Center to buy Ovations when she was shopping there.

You are luckier than I am H W , everyone I know are surprised by the sound of my O`s , and invariably ask me if they require " special strings " .

On another note , several have accepted the " plastic " Martin`s , not me tho`, they`re made to look like wood , and I find that " dishonest " , actually , I wonder if that wood -color will rub -off in time.

I know that most other guitar players are surprised at how good my Ovations sound. Don't know that I've ever converted anybody.

Those who say they don't like the sound of Ovations are generalizing a lot. Ovations have many different sounds. My FD14 sounds different from my OFC guitar (ding!), which sounds different from the GCDB, which sounds different from the GC Reissue, which sounds differrent from my 1537, which sounds different from the 30th CL visiting the house. And interestingly enough, the 1537 and 87C sound different. There are a lot of sounds there.

I would guess that the person who doesn't like the Ovation sound thinks that for one of two reasons. Either the only Ovation he's ever played is a Celeb at the Guitar Center, or it's somebody who would never play anything except a wood box guitar because anything else, by his definition, can't sound as good.....

I've actually been fortunate enough to convert 2 over to Ovation. One was Temporary as this person tends to be very "fickle" and changes their mind far to often. The other was just recently. The women who sings with my friend and I who also play's an "O". She fell in love with the tone and look. I helped her get an 1157-7 10th Aniversary. Gorgeous guitar and Great tone!!!

Last Sunday the special guest at my band's weekly residency was Gavin Moore, a singer-songwriter from Cork, Ireland who also happens to be the nephew of Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. Gavin was playing a very nice 14-fret slothead dreadnought by an eastern-European builder called Furch. During his second set he broke a string and while I changed it for him he used my 1581, which conviently happened to be in DADGAD, the same tuning he was using. After the show, while we were porking-out on far too much Indian food, Gavin told me that he'd never even considered Ovation before, but was very impressed by the feel and sound. I don't think he's about to go rushing out to buy an Ovation, but, as Moody said....

A guy at work got a Balladeer and a 1537 after playing mine. A secretary's husband got an Ultra GS after playing mine. Maybe that's why their wives won't let them come over and jam anymore.
Like FlySig, both daughters have them. Second daughter's boyfriend has been taking care of hers for awhile and is a convert. Today he took home my Custom Balladeer on loan for awhile.

Our former band leader was a trumpet player (symphony caliber) first and a Martin guitar player second. A year after I joined the band, he said he was considering a second guitar and asked for my recommendation on an Ovation. He moved to Spokane a while back and as of late last summer, he was still looking for a 1581 Adamas.

In the history of this board, a lot of people have sought out 1537's after I and several others started talking about them.

Quality will out.......

2ifbyC sent a Balladeer to my daughter in Iraq to play while she is there. She told me that everyone who has played it rants about how good it sounds and plays, and a couple have said they will be seeking out one when they return to the states.

I have also had a couple of my band member friends switch over after playing my Cedar-topped Elite. I have one Taylor-owner friend that is always re-tuning his guitar during practices, and I like holding my Adamas out to him and asking if he would like to use my "tuner"(:

Any time I get a used O in the shop OR a Celebrity, they don't last long. I sell a variety of guitars, but the O's always go first. As I stated in the other thread, you can't beat a Celeb for a starter guitar, and as I teach a lot of kids who are just starting out, they go fast.

I used to worry about it but life is too short. I just play what I play and let the cards fall where they may. If somebody likes what they hear or see from one of my guitars and I can turn them on to it, fine. If not that's OK too.

The way I figger, you might be in love with what you're playing and want to spread the word loud and far. But some day you'll hear or play something you like better. It always happens. Go look at my website and see how many guitars I describe as "one of the best". Well, it was at the time I wrote it. Then a better one came along.

Have fun with what you play, that's all that matters. Umm, s'Long as it's not a Tater.
