I am new to this site and I am new to Ovation guitars (and any other guitar for that matter). I purchased an elite 1778T - I made my decision based on sound, feel and appearance; now I just have to learn to play! While I was at the music store, the dealer showed me a used 1769 Custom Legend (manufactured in 1999) that made my jaw drop to the floor.

It is:

-pearl black (head stock and neck painted to match)
-it has a slotted head stock with an Ovation logo inlaid in abalone
-ebony bridge
-abolone inlay in rosette
-it is nylon strung
-deep bowl cut away
-body is completely trimmed in abalone
- fretboard is ebony with NO inlays except for a "1769" engraved into an abalone panel located in the 12th fret
-20 fret
-neck seems pretty wide (2-1/4" where body meets neck)
-optma EQ (with tuner)
-machines are black (made in Germany) with pearl knobs (keys, buttons - I'm a rookie, I don't what
they are referred to as)
-stamped USA with serial number on back of head stock

I talked to someone at Ovation - he wasn't real familiar with this configuration.

I was so impressed with the sound, appearance and character of this guitar, I took it home!

If anyone can shed some light, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There was a similar guitar on ebay recently, this was a custom order, seems like the one you are describing is also.

Hey Paul - thanks for the reply and the link to the one on eBay - it does look very similar. I now have to decide whether or not to keep it for myself!

Thanks!

Black is really hard to keep clean so I think you should probably sell it to me. I know, I know, it's more than I usually offer for such poor quality guitars but I'll give you $45 AND I'll pay the freight. (You should probably insure it for a few thousand dollars) Sounds like a really beautiful guitar. Keep it for sure! Sure would be nice to find out who it was built for.

Willard - generous offer my friend! I'll keep it in mind if get really desperate (and win the megabucks!).

I am still waiting for Ovation to call me back to see if they will cough up any details based on the serial number. For all that are interested, I will post my findings here.
