Location: Utah | Last night Kaki performed a very impressive concert here in Salt Lake. Her skill and talents are even more stunning when you see her live.
She played at a venue that is not one of the more elegant in SLC, a music venue with a definite dive atmosphere. Good acoustics, but two blocks into the warehouse/homeless shelters part of town. I feel like I should apologize to Kaki and tell her that she didn't see the real Salt Lake.
The tickets said 7pm, but that was door time not show time. We were 90 minutes early and ended up first in line, which translated into getting front center position in the standing only venue. The stage is raised about 2 feet, which put my eyes at Kaki's navel. Honestly, I felt like I was invading her personal space standing there between mic stands and monitors for her and the other guitarist.
For the guitar geeks, she played two identical looking custom Adamas with a crown inlay for the 12th fret marker. One looked like it had normal strings and the action was a bit higher than I like, but about like factory standard. The other had paler strings, maybe silk 'n steels, and the action was a good 2x higher than normal. She also played several Hamers, all Newports I believe, just different colors, pickups, string heights, and tunings.
Kaki played through various effects and then through a Genz Benz Black Pearl 30 amp which was mic'd. The other guitarist played an old old Gibson semi-hollow 335 (?) through an old Fender Bassman amp, also mic'd to the PA. The bass player was also mic'd at his Ampeg.
Kaki has a good relaxed presence on stage and she traded banter with the audience quite a bit.
Her left wrist frequently was very bent, even beyond 90 degrees. Her thumb was usually very close to the lower edge of the back of the neck and you'll see in the pictures that her fingers are quite bent, more reminiscent of a classical violinist than a guitarist. Due to her diminutive size, she had to make some long stretches but she also played barre chords easily above the 12th fret.
I was hoping she'd drop a pick that I could take home, but she only used her fingernails. For strumming she braced her thumb nail against her index fingernail.
Her other guitarist, Mack, was a lot of fun to watch. He really let it all hang out and was having a great time on stage. He too is an excellent musician.
At one point the guitar tech handed Kaki her Adamas with the wrong tuning. After shooting him a glance she tuned it by ear in about 5 seconds. The lady has an excellent ear.
The lady can also rock! She played a variety of styles from her signature "Pink Noise" to German metal "Dogs and Horses".
AFter the show she hung out at the merch table for a while to sign autographs and chat with fans. She is diminutive in size! She was very gracious and put up with all of us politely. Part of the haul for us was a vinyl EP that she signed for me, as well as a poster she signed for our eldest daughter. My wife snagged Kaki's set list off of the floor when she walked off stage, but it seemed too creepy to ask Kaki to sign it. It's in the last picture below with the EP.
I politely invited her to visit us here on the OFC, mentioning that we're a bunch of Ovation guitar fans and fans of her music. Hopefully I didn't scare her away.
Some cell phone pictures follow. Cameras larger than a point-shoot were not allowed. Nothing like an SLR was allowed.

Location: Utah | I forgot to put in the original post that my 19 yr old, who just bought herself a 2078T a few months ago, now wants a red Hamer Newport. The red is pretty much a candy apple gloss finish. Beautiful.
As someone asked in another thread, why the heck isn't Kaki a featured endorsee by Hamer?
I just want to run off on tour with Kaki and the Mountain Goats. | |
