Since I am apparently a member of The Great Unwashed, I could not repond to Miles' item in the Announcements board. I propose we have some general meeting times. Since most of us are in a 3-hour differential (apologies, Mr. Templeton), perhaps early evenings here on the Left Coast to accomodate our Right Coast cohort. Maybe 5:00-6:00PM Pacific MWF, with a Sunday brunch at 11:00 AM Eastern, just for equity.

With all due respect to Mile's effort in putting the chat room together, a group chat is a pain in the ass. Questions are asked, comments made, and the response comes in much later. I, for one, will pass on a chat room. That's why God gave us telephones.

Theoretically, it's in real time, like instant messaging. In real life, it can be a real traffic jam.

Having participated in a number of chat rooms by my employer in the Middle East, I can testify that they are a pain. We would have 25-30 participants in a moderated room, and it would still get difficult to manage. The unmoderated rooms with large groups were even worse.

Another side to chat rooms is that those that are not present do not receive the great information that comes out of some of the chats. By posting here on the board, we can all see all the sides of the topic at hand. Plus later we can always refer back to it if needed.

I vote to not have the chat sessions, and to instead keep the information posted here for all.

Chuck

chats can be fun AND there is the possiblity of having special guests.
I participate in a chat on monday evenings on aol hosted by Lisa Sharken a noted guitar mag writer. We have a blast and over the past few years have worked up a good community of folks.
sometimes it gets crazy and sometimes it is informative and sometimes it is dumb. Just like real life

I'm with Al and a few others on this. Don't knock it until you've tried it. As example, most directed fanclub type message boards are just forums for folks to rant and flame, but it seems to be different here.

I have been in many chats, everything from work related meetings, to celebrity chats to the monthly board meeting of my motorcycle club. They are sometimes organized, sometimes not.

Bottom line... the tool is there. If a group of folks to decide to meet and chat they should. If some would rather not, that's fine too.

It doesn't have to be groups. I have a pleasant chat with someone when I was setting it up about guitars and I think we talked about computers a bit, then later a few other folks came in and we talked about chats and the software. It was nice to discuss something in real time with several poeple...

results may vary

It's a nice feature, and one that's hard to control. The most difficlt part is finding any body around but if you do you get a chance to actually visit with one of our members in real time. Nothing is perfect. except maybe Glen and Buck, and they would probably join us if we asked them nicely.

Basically what I was saying, and not very well, is sometimes it is nice to talk directly to our members. If it turns into flaming sessions, maybe an admonition from the NJ enforcer might put it back on track. Remember folks, the Ovspranos can find you where you live, don't cross the Alpeprano consigliere.
