Hey...

I've written a song this week that I'm recording which is a lil' departure from my usual style, so I'm feeling a bit out of my element. I am 'hearing' a call for unusual effects, and I am typically not into them.

I stumbled on this "50's tremelo" effect, and it fits perfectly, but I know nothing about setting parameters on it. Is there any rule of thumb (like there is for delay parameters) for setting the speed to sync to the tempo, or is it typically just set loosely by ear?

Recording at home requires so many hats...songwriter, engineer, producer, guitarist (lead & rhythm), singer, bass player, drummer, keyboardist...so many pieces to the puzzle. More than half the time I'm just shooting in the dark when it comes to judgement, and most of the time the experimenting is half the fun! (the rest I'd like to plunge an icepick through my temple to silent the doubting voices in my head!)

I just need Paul Templeman to clone himself a "mini me" to live in my studio!

Thanks,
John

Set it by ear, you should do the same with delay effects unless you need it exactly on beat.

Miles is right, you need to match the tremolo speed to the tempo of the song, especially when the depth control is at it's higher settings. With a delay you can do a simple calculation to figure out the miliseconds/bpm relationship, but with trem you do it by ear.
