Location: Dallas, TX | I have inherited a guitar.
Academy Model #KA-14,
Serial #014136
(below it says : A Kaman Music Product, Made in Connecticut, USA.)
Can anyone shed light on this guitar? It was purchased in the Midwest in the early 80s. It has the bowl back, but a plastic face, & metal fretboard.

Location: NJ | the Academy was an entry level student guitar which had sort of what I call a "guitar placemat" as a top. I have yet to see any of those survive except for one....make that now two |

Location: Scotland | Is this the guitar which had the top & braces as a single plastic moulding, or did I dream that? |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | A few weeks back, a guy brought one to GC for new strings (and to have them "installed")- I mentioned the Ovation connection- he couldn't have been more disinterested. Anyhoo.... |

Location: 6 String Ranch | These braces were moulded into the top. The top was a cream SMC material and the bowl black SMC. The neck was aluminium with the foam back. There weren't too many made and were really a breakthrough. These should be going for about $50,000 in the second hand market. (Then I could move these ones I have in the basement.....)
Maybe that should be a period rather than a coma? |

I have played garrison's at the Namm show and I just had to walk way.

Just because something is innovative does not mean it is valuable.
we have seen this with Ovation over and over and over and over and over and over.
It is interesting how Ovation can come up with an innovation and it will be a moderate success or flop and then someone would copy it |

Location: Scotland | Al, I agree. It seems that by using their one-piece brace, kerfing, neck/tail block moulding, Garrison have found a way to produce a very well-made reasonably-priced guitar using solid timbers, without going offshore. Unfortunately they haven't figured out how to make them sound good. |
