Location: Waterloo, IL | Several times I have seen the question come up asking what a particular Ovation guitar is worth. I realize that guitar prices tend to be very subjective. Is it possible that the current used price, within the last year or so, could be added to the current excel spreadsheet format that shows the original list price?

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I guess based on what we have seen in the last year, we could just put $100 - $2000 average near all of the models. Just off the top of my head, we have seen UltraGP's go for $525 and $1600+, Adamas guitars for $600 and $2500, Vipers for $200 and $500, Breadwinners from $250 to $750. Seems kinda pointless to list something if there is no real set price other than what someone is willing to pay. |

Now that I am in a better frame of mind I think I can answer your question.
Ovation prices are all over the place as Miles has so dilligently indicated.
Price guides for Ovations IMHO are useless. Some of the best guidance comes on e bay since these are actively selling items. Of course there are exceptions and make that MANY expceptions.
Personally, I find most price guides useless. I own a couple only because they were given to me and although I find them useful as a good and for information for years etc, there is so often a large gap between selling price and actual street price that they are useless.
What to do? search e bay, g base, look at vintage guitar mag, search our sell/trade section here and use some old fashioned deductive reasoning.
Why I would oppose putting a "used" price section here is the following:
1 the market is volitile and fluctuates, a guitar worth 1500 today may be back to 300 when artist "X" is no longer in vogue.
2 I see no useful purpose it could serve
3 who will be in charge of this monumental task? not I.
4 who will be in charge of updating it? again not I
The list prices provided in the reference section leave us with a sense of where the guitar was considered in the line and that is a great help.

It was a book that listed, with pictures, the prices of used instruments and a pretty good history of the manufacturer. I forget what it was called. I didn't get it because I've made a resolution to buy a new instrument next. Maybe a new nylon stringed ovation. That would be nice. |

Location: Waterloo, IL | Amazing the answers that come back from what was meant as a simple question. :) I have been looking through ebay trying to find a US made Ovation 12-string, and noticing how prices on Ovations seem to vary. I don't mind paying a reasonable price, but that is hard to do when I don't know what a reasonable price is. I have seen how easy it is to get cuahgt up in the action on an auction, ebay or real, and pay way too much for an item. I have also seen things go for far less than they were really worth. Both extremes make it hard for me to decide how much to bid or pay for a used guitar. Maybe there is hope yet for me.
As far as keeping up the list, I would be willing to update the list once a month. I would just need to know what reference to use. I was not sure of the practicality of a keeping a list of used prices on the OFC site. At least now I have a better idea.
Al and Miles, please keep up the good work you are doing here. Thanks to all those that keep the information flowing, I have learned a lot more about Ovations here than I ever imagined I would.

Secondly, if it is an Ebay auction, determine the maximum it is worth to me, then bid that maximum towards the end of the auction. If I get it for less than my max, great, but if the auction goes over that amount then at least you haven't been caught up in the "bidding fever".

That is pretty much what I have been doing. However, I am still learning more about the way ebay works. There was a mention by someone much earlier on finding used Ovations via other sources than ebay. It sounded like it was an onine source, but the individual never did reveal any further information. Can't remember right now who made the statement. I did take a day to sweep through a number of pawn shops in the area, but did not find any O's. May just have to wait until I can save up enough pennies for a new 12-string, although that may take a long time around here.

I am not too particular on which U.S. made Ovation 12-string it is. I prefer the deep bowl sound. Biggest thing is finding one that I can afford. $400 is the max, and the spousal unit would prefer that I go less.

I got to second Bluebird's advice. Set a price you're willing to pay and resist the urge to bid again. I just bought an Ovation on ebay a couple days ago. I spent a few weeks monitoring similar guitars to guage the price first. There are a couple Glen Cambell 12s on ebay right now for under $400. |
