Anyone re-prioritizing their short list?

Out of all the 'O's and 'A's I saw and fondled this past weekend, I was totally captivated by Keith's (War Eagle) 1680.

The walnut, ebony and gold combination just has that understated eloquence found on few carbon tops. I thought it actually sounded a touch better than a couple of the UTEs.

If I ever get one, I'd like to locate a black bridge and nut.

The wood top that blew me away was Brad's (BluesSailor) FD14. I've always loved the pics of it, but it sounds just as sweet as it looks. Awesome wood top!

Anyone else...?

Johnny,
never heard a 1680 but I'm a great lover of cedar wood tops. Cedar is leaning more to the sweet side then spruce. I fully understand your consideration for the FD14 ;) . Would be nice to own one.

One of the joys/hazards of a gathering, besides meeting the great folks you've been "talking" with here on the board, is the chance to see, touch, & play guitars you'd probably never get a chance to otherwise.

I feel lucky having attended a few of these now & between that & the excellent advice & salesmanship found here I've pretty much got my collection set (for now).

I still really like the sound of the UTE, but I can't really justify getting one right now. Maybe somewhere down the road a ways.

There are 2 that I'm jonesin' for: one I've wanted since January of last year - Beal's 2080D with the MANLY neck. The other one is a new one on me as of the Smokies Jam, and that's Beal's blue longneck Adamas (was that a 1681?). Fortunately for my budget, there's no chance Beal's gonna part with either of those.

no no nO No NO NO!!

The UKII was it for the short list.

The long list is of course a different story. I think that Trader Jim has it right - let as many as you can pass through your hands - try 'em all!

If I ever make it to the shop again, I've got the makings of a Preacher Deluxe 12 string and a Deacon. Time is NOT on my side though...

Serge, Al can order you a 2080D so you don't need Beals. :D

My slothead 2080D is still one of my favorites and one that I grab off the wall first.....currently tuned to a "C". The 2080D 12 is a close 2nd!

The 2080's are really cool guitars but making them a longneck turns them into monsters!

Stephen's custom baritone twins are really different. They look and play like guitars, but have so much bottom end that they are truly unique instruments. Add a 72 E string like Beal's, tuned to as low as you want, and you end up with a bass drum with sustain. They're very unique instruments. Everybody should have an opportunity to try one if possible.

Riccardo , I'm a wood top man myself and agree with you. But that carbon 1680 really turned my head, eyes and ears! Plays so smooth also. The pic doesn't do it justice. We need Damon to pull out that red blanket and capture the sweetness.

Serge, I was forewarned about the high octane GAS generated at the jams and was somewhat prepared. But I never thought I'd be caught off guard this bad!

Yepper, Beal's longneck was a surprise also. I had never handled one before.

Mike, that was a sweet adoption!

Since your short list is completed (riiight!), did the jam alter your long list?

One thing going to a jam does is let me know what I need to have. I know I need an Adamas one day, and a wood top. I need an electric and I love my Viper and my Deacon. I can't imagine needing more, but for my church playing, a VXT might even be the perfect thing. It would take more than the Deke is worth to make me sell it, and I don't ever want to be without a Viper, even if it's a beater.

So here's my priority list:
1) Get an Adamas cutaway, a 1581 would be perfect in blue, red or beige.

2) Deal the T and get a woodgrained top with a nice burst, again with a cutaway. I just don't love the plugged in sound of that guitar.

After that I can just become Trader Jas for fun, keeping the main stable intact.

I figure with these two items, I'm set for life. So if it takes a long time to accomplish, I'm good with that.

May very well be - I didn't realize he'd just snagged one, but that's not one I'd seen in his stable before.

It's the bleen one that I just got from Mark Casstevens. Was it on ebay? I didn't think so, he advertised it here. It's one of the first five and is great even though it has a girlie neck.

Iffy - the jam didn't really alter my long list. As stated by Moody and Cliff - I've been to the factory tour, several jams, and Al's house a couple of times. My long list has been influenced greatly by those visits and hasn't changed much at all.

I had a reverse effect from the Jam--played some things I thought I'd really like and want, but discovered they weren't me at all.
The long necks are different, but, not me.
The FD is too deep for my shoulder, but fun to play a bit; still, not me.
However...Richard's new one might cause some severe internal distress. Not being shallow or s/s, though, keeps me out of trouble.
I know what I really want, but it's still several light years away......

I was talking to Karen and said GAS was kind of silly, but after thinking about it....playing all those others gits, I wasn't rushing to take my 1778 EliteT out of it's case--it could be set up a little better--I'm sure that would help. But realized playing Richard's that I barely noticed the wider neck and it sounded and felt really good....this could be trouble

I have one of those 'T' things I need to get rid of (purchased in a moment of weakness)--then I'll have some more cash...I know, don't hate me...I've had my 1617 Legend since 1982--that needs a little work, too. So it was awesome to sit and play so many great gits...

As Beal said--I believe I've been rurnt (NC for ruined)...I'll be thinking more along those GAS lines the next time I play with all y'all!!!

Karen, excellent point; kinda like the flip side of the coin! I also was able to 'eliminate' several gits that are highly touted (rightly so) and at one time gave me GAS.

This is a good thing!
It happened at AmeliaMatt last, one guy was dying to buy a Tak 75, but after playing one for a few hours said, "It's just not me". These are things that you usually don't discover in a store, it's just not the right environment.
The other is true too, you can spend "quality time" with a guitar and find that it really is you, which is GAS producing.

One of the really really great things about the Factory Gathering is the evenings in the hotel lobby. They go on until all hours, everybody has their best guitars out and everybody has the chance to play whatever they want. You have the opportunity to discover what's really right for you, and what's not......

In 30 years or more I never felt the need to own a 12 string til I played woz's in the lobby.

Although I might have ordered a custom ute by now if I hadn't played both jeff's and ttenn's and been completely unable to decide which I liked best. Still haven't decided.
