Location: SoCal | The are rare in that you don't see them on ebay every day. But I see 10-12 on ebay every year, most of them Preacher Deluxes. |

They are excellent guitars and most folks who bought them "back in the day" played the daylights out of them. I am still thinking there were only a few hundred made though. Deacon 12-Strings and Viper 12-Strings are also out there. |

I see the Deacon 12's occassionally, but except for the pics in your collection, I've never seen a Viper 12 string. I've got a buddy who had a left handed Viper 12 string built (mimicing a Bluebird 12), but that's it. I was really surprised the first time I looked at your total gallery and saw the Viper 12. You've got a couple of them (I'm too lazy to go look this morning)? |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I think I only have one Viper 12. They were listed in one of tha catalogs, but I have no idea how many were made. I had "heard" of it before mine, but mine it ths only one I have seen. |

Location: Central Oregon | I just noticed something interesting. The guitar I asked about & the one Brudev posted the link to are the same guitar. Same picture exactly. The guy has zero feedback. It appears he's selling the same guitar twice. I wonder how he's going to get out of that mess.

| In my experience, with looking at Ovations on ebay, the sellers almost always have a guitar to sell. The problem is, that very often the picture they post is not of the actual guitar they are selling. If I am interested in a guitar, the first thing I ask them is. ‘Is the photo you posted of the actual guitar you are selling?’ You would be amazed at how many start backpedaling to that question? This is also more common form the big sellers and guitar shop sellers than the little guy.

I have found several of my articles reprinted without my permission on various websites. One was translated to Japanese so I guess I have not way to check the translation. They did spell my name right and gave me attribution, but they did not ask my permission...all they had to do was ask. |

I have done a lot of research on this, and in fact there really isn't any law on the matter. It's still a case by case if someone wants to push it. There are two arguments.. the "it's like a magazine or book" or "if you put it on the internet, it is expected to be copied."
What factors into this making writing the law difficult is actually a TECH issue that most people do not realize. There is the simple part that when you look at a web page, you have already copied the text adn images to your computer. That's just how it works. But there is also the issue of "caching" servers which an easy explanation of is... A company might set one up for it's employees. Anytime one employee looks a page, it is copied to a local server. The next employee then, unless the page has been updated, gets served locally so it's much faster. The government does this a lot becuase there are a lot of people potentally looking at the same documents.
Anyway, the problem is where to draw the line, if any. You can limit access or the ability to copy from the internet, but it is easily defeated. Act more like a deterent.
As far as eBay... posting a picture that isn't the item is just wrong unless it states "photo not of actual item" which many do. Even commercial catalogs and websites do that. |

| Late last year a guitar shop that sells a lot of Ovations on ebay advertised a new Ovation described as a 1777-USA flag guitar with OP50 preamp. The starting price if I remember was in excess of $2000. I thought the description and price were a bit unusual.
The problem was compounded when I looked at the pictures they had posted.
Since the guitar in question is limited production, most people probably never noticed. When I emailed them to point out the discrepancies they replied with a short incredulous sentence implying I didn’t know what I was talking about. The guitar got no bids. Nor did it get any bids the next time or the next time they posted it. I emailed them again pointing out that they were either incredibly stupid or were knowingly intending to defraud the ebay byres. This time they thanked me and blamed the error on some poor kid posting the guitars for him saying they had wondered how others could sell the 1777-USA’s at a much lower price until they checked the label and realized their guitar was a 1779-USA. They immediately re-listed it and went on about how it was a 1779 not a 77 but he never change the description of the preamp from OP50 to Optima. The guitar sold with one bid.
I am amazed at how many times items on sail at my grocery store scan at the regular price and not the sail price. When I catch it, it always gets blamed on the computer or stock boy.
Some people like me are just dumb and others are dumb like foxes.

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | so far most of the ebay guitars i bought came close to the description. i got burnt on a yakima 12 string i was going to set up for slide. it never arrived and the e mail address/seller never responded. another was a 9.2 described custom balladeer that turned out to be more like a 7. the guy, carr guitar wouldn't do anything and even left ME negative feedback for complaining.
ebay requires a degree of faith and a paper trail of questions and answers regarding the description. a few questions i asked revealed problems not in the description. "in good condition for a guitar it's age" always makes me ask a few more questions. non responsive sellers usually have something to hide.
i got a guitar once described as professionally refinished. the neck dots were gone and filled in with plaster of paris. he also sanded the fretboard across the grain. still was a good guitar after i fixed his professional mistakes. |
