Has anyone compared the 2003 Collectors' edition with a custom elite (accoustic sound quality)?

I've never played the 2003 Collectors' ed. and I like the custom elite a lot. I am curious if there is a noticeable difference between the AA top on the collectors' edition and the AAA on the custom elite.

After much price shopping I found I can get the custom elite for less money but I really don't like the black cherryburst look. The collectors' edition looks awesome but with a lesser grade top.

I won't be able to test drive them side by side so I'm looking for opinions.

Thanks in advance.

I've played them both, btu not side by side. You would not be disappointed with either one (assuming you went for the mid depth CE not the shallow bowl). The CE is a little fancier with all the abalone inlays. If it were me, I'd go for the Collector because of the look. The inlaid wood epaulettes are really nice and the vintage natural color is very classy in my opinion. But if money were tight, the CE is certainly a great second choice. You might want to inquire about custom ordering a CE in natural finish if that's what you want, but I doubt it would be any cheaper than the Collector. I would be very surprised if your ears could hear the difference between a AA top and a AAA top. Dave

Thanks. Yea, money's tight so custom ordering a CE778 in natural isn't likely.

About a year ago I talked to a salesman in a local shop and he said the Ovation guys came in with wood samples and gave a very insightful presentation. He said the AAA spruce was so flexible you could bend it. It could have been a hard sell on his part but he was pretty convincing.

I have played both. The collector's edition IMHO always uses select woods and are great guitars. It is a matter of your own personal choice really. If you want a 2003 I have one and it is on my website let me know if you are interested.

Alpep,

Thanks. I've just about convinced my significant other that I really, really, really, need another guitar. I'll let you know.

Go for custom elite, which is top of line Ovation, if $ difference is not much.

Collector series is essentially elite or legend. Most are not really collectible, in my opinion. 2003's value will drop significantly in a few months when 2004 comes out.
