what would you say makes most of the sound on the ultra gp? what makes the guitar so unique?

The ultra GP is no different than any other electric guitar. I have never owned an ultra gp but have owned countless guitars.

Ultimately it is what your fingers and hands do with the guitar that make it happen. Sure a well crafted instrument helps the process along with good pickups and an amp but I have seen people play pieces of crap and made them sound great. I have also seen people play very expensive instruments and made them sound like crap.

The ultra GP has some well built korean and USA parts combined into a cool package. If you bought an ibeenhad artist of that era it would probably be similar along with the yamahaha sg 2000 which is a guitar I personally regret selling way back in the day.

Currently the QOTNSA guitartist josh holmes (?) plays one and is popular so that is what is making these guitars demand a high price. Also realize that I have seen his guitars and they are modded for string through the body and not stop tailpieces. This gives you added string length and allows you to use thicker strings with a slinkier feel. I am not sure if he tunes down or not but would not be surprised if he did.

just my thoughts. sorry I cannot honestly answer your question because I am not so sure any magic wand was used in the production of those guitars.

There is absolutely nothing unique about the GP. It's just a well made, well designed Korean guitar, with a vastly inflated value due to the hero worship thing. The sound of any guitar is more to do with the player than the instrument or amplification. Josh Homme would sound like he does no matter what guitar he plays.

I can only add the guitar has some of "it" in the design. There is something alluring about a basically standard style body, set neck, with the Ovation headstock. I have owned a few now, and they were all VERY consistant in workmanship and playability.
I have looked at and played a few of the import set-neck offerings from folks like BC Rich and Schecter, and to match the quality of the GP in a new guitar you'd have to spend over $800. But they don't have that personality thing ("it") going on.
I guess uniqueness coupled with a connection to a current artist has really boosted the price, but they are also a really good guitar, limited in production with a lot of personality.

I've always wondered if this:

was manufactured at the same time and/or in the same factory and/or by the same designer.
