It's about 12:45 am Friday night...I just got in from seeing Cliff play at a Pub with his duo partner Rick. They were great...they played a ton of awesome songs, they both sang really well, and played some mean guitar. Michele and I both really enjoyed the gig!
Cliff's voice is amazing...his range is outrageous, singing Zep powerfully and passionately. I was also dug his wicked right hand strummin'too. These guys cook, and we had fun.
Just thought I'd share that with ya all.
All the best, and thanks for a great time, Cliff! Thanks to Jeanette for keeping us company! What a sweetheart!

Always good to hear about our buddies on the board. I try to visualize them as great players from their great observations, and it's good to know I was right. I think every picker values the kind of things you said about Cliff more than anything. Thanks for the insight.

Thanks for the kind words John, but it's really just a couple of washed-up hacks playing some stuff that was never intended for acoustic guitars to a bunch of people too drunk to know how bad we really are (Michele and yourself excluded, of course!). Rick and I had a good time as well. Thanks again for coming. That was a "maiden gig" at that venue and your enthusiastic participation (along with that big party that came down from the dining room upstairs and STAYED - something that doesn't happen too often according to the bartender) awarded us several more bookings there. THX!
(Next time, I expect you two to come up and do a couple numbers!)
On another note, "Ovation Sighting":
Last night we went to see (for our first time) "Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band" annual summer tour. Quite an impressive show!! Not a bad deal for the participants either. You get to do your 3 or 4 "hits" to an appreciative crowd of people (who might not make the effort to see you on tour - IF you even tour anymore) while being backed by other good musicians, AND display your musical prowess playing back-up to the other musicians on their "hits".
Line up:
Paul Carrack (Ace, Squeeze, Mike & the Mechanics) - Keyboards/Vocals
Colin Hay (Men at Work) Guitars/Vocals
John Waite (Babys) Bass/Guitar/Vocals
Sheila E. - Percussion/Vocals (who by the way, kicks ASS on the drums!! And not just the "latin stuff" she's famous for, she sat at her own drum kit and did some of the best rock drumming I'd ever SEEN!).
And the guy that REALLY impressed me was saxophonist Mark Rivera (I think he plays with Billy Joel - amongst others). Not only does this guy WAIL on the sax, but he sang back-up, played keyboards, harmonica, flute, bass, and guitars.
He played two Hamer solid bodies, a six and a twelve (sorry Al, I don't know the models), and on an acoustic song he played a black 12-string Ovation VIPER (electric/acoustic) that looked like it had some custom inlay work on the top, so I'm assuming it was a "custom build".
Just another prime example of how a true professional "working" musician tends to not insert his head up the ass of the sheep in front of him using "all the rave" and researches and utilizes the BEST tools on the market available to him as a live, performing musician.

My wife, a dyed in the wool big band fan, has two favorites outside that Genre, Jerry Lee Lewis and his country songs and "Boucoups Of Blues" by Ringo Starr (made in Nashville I think, but not with Nashville musicians). | |
