Location: Netherlands | Does anyone know how I should maintain my smt's neck?
I don't have the original documentation, but on the website it says it's hand rubbed with urethane oil.
I like giving my loved one a good neckmassage, but should i do this with the forementioned oil only or are there alternatives (wax, lemon pledge, teak oil?).
And should i oil the fingerboard and bridge as well with u-oil?

We've talked about the oil thing several times. Seems like different people use different things for various reasons. Try doing a search for "oil" and see what comes up. |

Location: Netherlands | I saw there have been many discussions about this. I always do a search first, but I think i posed the question wrongly. Suppose urethane oil was applied in Hartford, can I wax the neck without damaging it?
I have a solid wooden floor and I was told wax and oil don't mix.
BTW: I must get something off my chest:
I know many questions are asked time and time again, i myself am also guilty of this. But take into consideration that MANY MANY threads take so many U-turns and deviations that it's very hard to find an answer between all the -mostly funny and very entertaining- BS.
Last week I was searching for info on adjusting the trussrod and action related to specific problems with the neck of one of my guitars. I spent 2.5 hours reading all the topics, learned and laughed a lot but didn't find an answer.
I joined this group in february and was member 1200. We are with 1700 now. I don't think it's fair to expect everyone to start reading all posts again. Of course, one should do a search first, but if 50 threads come up, of which the first 5 contain 25 messages with BS and chitchat, please don't expect him to read the other 45 threads.
I myself try to answer questions if I know the answer. Some of you, like cwk2, al, miles and Paul T. -amongst others- know much much much much more about Ovations than i ever will or will feel the need to. I'm glad they take the time to answer -sometimes dumb or ignorant- questions and I understand others find it annoying that people keep asking the same questions, but what good is a message board if messages can't be posted? That's what it's about, right? The sharing of info.Plz don't take this as an offense.
Please don't forget my question: can I wax an oiled neck? From cliffs answer I think it's pretty safe.

Location: Central Oregon | I didn't have any of the "preferred" brands of wax, but I had Turtle wax so I used some of that on my Elite's oiled neck yesterday & it seemed to work fine, near as I could tell.

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Martin, I have to agree with the spirit of your last offerring. It sounds like you're trying to do your homework first. That's very commendable. I think if a new topic starts with something like, "I just spent the better part of the last three hours, and three beers, sifting the archives, trying to find out about [blank]...."; then I would cut the poor soul some slack.
As for incompatible neck treatments, I have heard silicone-based products don't mix with petroleum-based products real well. Other than that, I'm curious myself. |

I always used the type of bees wax that came in the little tins that Warwick basses used. We used to distribute them and I would up with a dozen or so of those cans. |

Location: Ct./ USA | Danish wiping oil is what is used on the mahogany neck finish. It can be bought at any hardware store. You only need a pint of oil and some clean rags. Wet the rag and wipe it on, wipe it off, apply 3 more times and dry the neck with a rag, buff with a rag.If that is not enough sand the neck back with 220 grit and then 320 grit then 400 grit and then add the oil and be sure to clean the fingerboard. Use steel wool. Losen the strings and tape them lose then when it is clean retune your gutiar.Any wood wax might give it a 1200 grit feel to the finish.

Location: San Bernardino, California | Most steel wool has motor oil on it to keep it from rusting, so be sure to get the type that doesn't have oil. 0000 guage works well but gets all over the place. |

| grrroovedude, I have to agree whole heartedly with your last obversation/comment. Many forums with old timers that meet every day on the forum to visit (this one included) have very knowledgable members that eventually get tired of answering the same questions. Rather than refraining from replying when they feel this way, they vent their spleen with the sarcaustic (spelling intended) comment to 'read the archives'.
I had that reponse when I first posted on this forum after also searching the archives and NOT finding what I was looking for. Unfortunately this ocurred after a similar event on another forum, so I was a little miffed when it ocurred again here. My reply was not as nice as yours, but accurate, to the point, if caustic. Although their reaction was as I expected, the old timers did understand that newbees need polite replies to repeated questions and provided me with valuable info. and opinions.
We still have the occasional stuffy, tired, caustic old man reply with 'read the archives' rather than silence - just ignore him. |

Location: Austin, Tx | I think your all crazy to put any type of oil or wax on your guitars that was not made for it. All I've ever used is guitar polish and fast fret. I think you should check with Ovation before sanding your neck and applying anything like what your talking about. |

Sorry 'bout the "search the archives" response. I really wasn't trying to shine you on but just letting you know that there is a wealth of information in the archives including what to put on your guitars neck. It's interesting to read some of the comments that range from..."I use lemon oil pledge on my neck every time I change the strings and have been doing so for for ever with no harmful effects and...." to "...what ever you do, don't ever use lemon oil pledge on your guitar and if you do oil the neck, only do so once or twice a year or you'll....."
I think everyone has a different opinion. Sorry if I offended you or anyone else. |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I think for MAINTAINING the neck, just use a guitar polish. Search the data base and you'll find lots of recommendations. For the fretboard, lemon oil when it looks dry, but apply sparingly. Utherane oil, like danish oil is a finish, as far as I know. While they are light, think about what polyutherane is? They are finishes. Stick with polish and wax for the wood, not a finish, otherwise you'll be sorry. |

The Hand rubbed Urethane Oil Neck
This neck finish is available on most Ovation models. If your guitar has it, you will notice a natural wood feel on the neck. It requires a higher level of maintenance than a gloss finished neck.
Approximately once a month, if you play daily, you will want to apply a commercially available wax. We recommend...
Trewax
Lundmark's Clear Paste Wax
Butcher's Bowling Alley Paste Wax
They are available at most hardware stores. |

You did not offend me. It's just that in general it's frustrating to get the 'search the archives' tune if that's exactly what you did. I was a bit lenghty about it because last time i got the response i just bitched 'i did search the archives blablabla' and I myself offended someone unintentionally.
