I just picked up a new digital recorder. I decided to try and plug my 1537 directly into the unit for recording. The problem is, I'm getting a horrible hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

If I touch the guitar cord jack, the hum goes away. What can I do about it?

TIA

First thing I'd do is use a different cord, if it's not the cord try it into something other than your recorder. If it's still there it could be a fault with the guitar electronics

I got a hum using a guitar and amp in a room with a reostat (dimmer switch). Your hum may have nothing to do with the equipment you are using.
