Pair of the first issue large single coil torroidal Breadwinner pickups on ebay. Pickup mounts are missing though

This has always puzzled me... on some breadwinners with these pickups the six regtangular "things" seem to be covered with a piece of black textured plastic (looks like the bridge stuff.) But on most I see (like these) those regtangular things are exposed. What are those regtangular things, and did the guitar originally come with plastic covers or is it just bad photographs?

They're "L" shaped magnets. The magnets and the screw form a "U" shape, with one of the uprights being the screw. The coil is wrapped around the bottom of the "U". Most of the body of the pickup is plastic with a metal shield wrapped around part of it.
