in fact I have 2, the 84 and 93 Collectors.
Then when I want to really treat myself out comes the 03 Collector or 1537. |

For electric, a Strat copy. I don't let just anyone play my Breadwinner - it's too cool. :) |

Location: Phoenix AZ | You know, "beater" is such a derrogatory term. I like to think more in terms of
- guitar I just grab and play
- not worried about a stand or a case
- lean it against the chair, wall, amp, whatever
- never wipe off the fingerprints
- take it anywhere, pass it to anyone
- never worry about humidity, scratches, etc.
For me that would be the Academy and the 430SS. The academy for obvious reasons. Shit I sent it to a party once along with a box of dry erase markers and instructions to "have it it". I can't think of too many guitars that people would do that to and not blink. Dut despite being a "beater", it's actually a kick ass sounding and playing guitar. Definately in the mid part of the Ovation line. Way better than a lot of Legend and Elite type guitars.
The 430SS is the other one but for different reasons. It's hard to call a $1500 guitar, with the worlds best pre-amp system, a "beater". But it's just my do-everything, take-anywhere, and never worry about it guitar. In the last 8 months since I got it it has easily 20x the playing hours on it than any other guitar in the house. It's not "the best" guitar in the house by a long shot but it's a guitar that I just always gravitate to and it never disappoints. If you had to buy one all around guitar on a 1500 budget there might not be a better choice out there.
OK, Beat On !!!

Location: Jet City | oh, beater... um if we're going by Dave's standards, acoustically, the 1117 Deluxe Balladeer, plugged in the 1778LX which has been designated the playing out guitar (all bung holes are plugged, and it stays in the case ready to run out the door at a moment's notice) |

- guitar I just grab and play - yup
- not worried about a stand or a case - hangs on wall
- lean it against the chair, wall, amp, whatever - yes but carefully
- never wipe off the fingerprints - yup
- take it anywhere, pass it to anyone - yup but in OHSC
- never worry about humidity, scratches, etc - erm no |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I have an old Yamaha that I call the "house guitar". It's the one I'll let anyone play who comes into the shop for a jam, loan out to friends who need a guitar to play at the Flatiron on last minute notice, and never have to worry about. It has low, comfortable action and a big booming bass. A lot of people have asked about buying it, but I won't sell it. Then I wouldn't have a "beater" anymore! |

The only 6 string steel Ovation I own is the 97 Collectors which I might bring to the next jam. |

| I have a friend/collector in Phoenix who sold me an excellent '92 1767 a few years ago. I heard from him today, he also has his original 80's model 1767 for sale now. I don't have the extra cash now or I'd buy it. It's in very good condition, the neck is straight, the frets are dressed, and the top is aged to a honey color. You could get a very nice 'better than a beater' Legend and original case for 3 to 4 hundred.
If anyone is interested. I'll forward his info. He's a stand-up guy, buys and sells high quality guitars.

Location: NW NJ | Tak EF349 - hangs on the wall in my office at church and all the young people know that they can play it any time they want. Has a couple of nicks on the front, but it is panelmaster all around and built like a tank. The neck is perfect though and the action is terrific. Sweet playing and overall good sounding guitar. When you plug it in, it sounds just like any other tak... amazing! |

And by that definition, 90% of my guitars are beaters even tho' they span my 87C to my 1537 to my GC RI. About the only guitar I own that doesn't fit in that catagory is the OFC'er (ding!)..... |

I do have the 1121 and the 1617, both of which are pretty-well trashed...
But I still don't wanna dent them anymore than they already are...

Location: Tennessee | 1982 Collectors I bought from standingovation for less than two bills. Electronics are missing, tuners are swapped out to plain chrome, the tops has tons of lacquer cracks, there are parts on the top where it looks as if someone used nail polish to touch up scrapes and dings, the neck binding has its share of cracks, and one of the headstock ears has been quite obviously glued back on. But it sounds killer and plays like a dream. It is the acoustic guitar my son used on "Fool's End" which is on the OFC3 disk. It is the Timex of all guitars. |
