I've got the Hercules short hangers that hang the guitars just off the wall. I was thinking of going to the longer angle hangers to be able to stack the guitars closer together. Who uses the longer angle ones, and how are they working out for you?

I hate to respond after dawg's comment, but I have 3 of the adjustable Hercules. They work fine and save about 1/3 the space. They seem a bit flimsy, but are OK. The screws were a bit weak, however. I twisted one off screwing it into the mahogony.

Dawg,
Uuuhhhmmm--I don't know how to say this, but, as gently as I can, there are sisters who read here, and that's more than I really needed (or wanted) to know.....keep in mind, I overlook a whole lot of stuff, but....sometimes it's harder than others......

Back on topic - thanks for bringing this up, Jim. I was just thinking today that I needed to do some rearranging to fit the coming 1687-30th. I figured the angled Hercs were probably the way to go, since most guitar stores seem to use them.

I know there's a few members that use them, and seeing the added stress put on the mounting bracket with the guitar so far out, I was wondering if anyone's had problems with breakage. I could just see my 1537 falling off with the bracket still mounted to the wall and the holder still firmly attached to the neck.

Besides standard wall mount systems, I've used hangers off the ceiling, on compound angle brackets, drilled into 1" round rack supports, and even against the rack webbing shelves. When creating a custom mount, I start with the the Swing system that screws directly into the wood block. I then throw the block away and keep the threaded hanger fork which I can then attach to any fabricated bracket you want to create, and you can make it as heavy duty as your comfort level requires.

I use wall hangers (String Swings) and they seem solid as a rock. I don't worry about my guitars at all.....

I use Off The Wall hangers, and when I installed the very first one (for the SlotHead), I successfully hung my entire body weight from it before I put the guitar in it . . .

TJ, that's what I use. I put 4 to 8 on a 1x4 and mounted that to the wall with 3 or 4 lag bolts. And I'm hanging Nationals.

The engineering room at the factory had a row of these hangers with about 10 virtually priceless ovation historical guitars hanging from them. I'd say they're safe.

Saw the of the wall hangers, but I was looking for the longer type that you can angle to hang the guitars closer together. The only ones I've seen from that company are the shorties like the Hercules I have now.

I think I got my Herc hangers that pivot from Al. Last I knew he was a Hercules dealer.

Jim - the long ones with the pivot yoke are model GSP40WB. Al, huh? I'll contact him, I want 4 of them. Cheapest I've seen online is $20.95, my local music store would have to order them (at full retail, $29.95).

Al's price was as good as any I found, but I only ordered from him because I wanted those sought after pizza boxes.

I've got about 25 of them hanging up in my music room. I got them from Al, and the price was excellent. They work terrifically, and I used Beal's advice when I was putting them up in terms of spacing and making them secure. Here's a pic of how they look:

I'll order from Al even if it's a little more (which it won't be in my experience with him) just because it's the right thing to do for all his hard work in keeping this place going. I owe him for a number of new, great friends.

hmmm...

Bobbo, I wanna come to you house to play.

I'm glad TJ started this. I hadn't even considered these things and I got guitars propped up here and there and everywhere.

Bobbo, what's the spacing?

8" apart for the electrics and basses, and 10" apart for the acoustics. You could probably go and inch or so less if you're pressed for space, but I like the little bit of extra room between the guitars to keep the banging to a minimum.

I'm trying to lower my carbon footprint, Prof. ;)

I have a ton of art and other memorabilia that is framed and ready to go on the wall ... but it's all still leaning up against workbenches and mixing desks. I've been spending my time in the loft playing instead of decorating.

I did mine 12 inches apart. I still clunk them together once in awhile taking them out. If you could stand right in front of them you probably wouldn't have to put them that close, but mine are sort of in a corner and I reach over an amp. If I was going to do it all over again, I'd probably use more of them to save wall space so I could buy more guitars.

after measuring some I've decided that ripping out existing wallhangers, buying the new ones, then installing them at 10" intervals would only gain me enough space for 3 more on the wall.

It's probably better this way, running out of room.

Say Damon, if you're willing to start from scratch, you have the room for many more, but you need a master plan rather than just adding on and squeezing stuff in as it arrives. I learned this the hard way. Bandrooms can be living works of art.

I made the mistake of assembling a weight machine in the basement, before I made it into my "music room". It would be worse than moving a grand piano, so it will stay where it is when the house gets sold. Takes up a lot of room that could be used for guitars and I use it about as much as some of the guitars. I don't have any other room with as much available wallspace, though.
Dave has a walkin closet with hangers spaced so that he can put them upper or lower. That might be the most efficient use of space.

Btw, an advantage of wall hangers is that you only have a certain number and that sort of forces you into the "one in - one out" routine. In the grand scheme of things (think "swmbo") this is a good thing. If you store them in cases, well there's no stopping you from just keeping the pile growing, and growing, and growning ...

I heard a TRUE story about a certain person who sold his personal favorite cutaway Adamas I. While searching through his stash of guitars to find something else to play in its place he found ANOTHER of the same damn guitar, same color, same everything, that he didn't even know he HAD !!! And this person was NOT ME.

Great story, Dave. Cables and patch cords, likely. Wrenches and tools, maybe. A guitar? Never.
