Sounds like it could be component failure in the pre-amp. Piezo crystals tend to either work or not, and if you're getting output from each string at a consistent volume, then it would suggest the pickup is working. The ultra-high impedance of piezo pickups causes the tone you are describing if they are used without a pre-amp or with a faulty pre. It's worth checking that the mini-jack which connects the pickup to the pre is secure. Are you in the UK? I have a working pre from a 1612.
