I went to a music festival this weekend. It was advertised as an 'Acoustic Music Festival'.
The first thing I saw when I was driving up to the campground office was a guy playing a piano accordion, further down the road were 6 people jammin' with banjos. Yup - 6 banjos. It was advertised as an Acoustic Music weekend, but the signs all over the campground said 'Bluegrass Festival'.
False advertising or what?
Anyway, I don't mind bluegrass, or banjos, to be honest, but accordions??? I thought torture was illegal?
Anyway, part of the attraction of this weekend was that there were free-for-all jam sessions all over the campground with a concert on Saturday night, followed by more jams afterwards.
I couldn't find any jams playing my sort of music. I don't mind bluegrass - I actually like it. Trouble is, I don't know any songs.(even though they all sound the same.)
So I trudged back to my camp and just played to my friends and family. This is where it gets interesting...
I was playing around with an Ozark Mountain Daredevil song (Standing on a Rock) which I normally either play just the harmonica or flatpick on the guitar. I was just mucking about with it with the harmonica holder and I thought to myself I wasn't doing too bad. When I finished the song, about 10 invisible people applauded. A semicircle of people had gathered just on the edge of our camp.
I was really chuffed that they'd applauded and thanked them. But they didn't go. They wanted another. So, to cut a long story short, I played another half dozen or so Neil Young, Cat Stevens etc. songs and got a big response after each. (I wasn't the only one sick of bluegrass) One of the audience took over the singing after the first 2 or so, coz my chest had given up due to the remnants of the 'flu. WOW! What a voice he had.
Playing with a great singer and getting genuine applause - a first for me after more than 35 years of playing.
I couldn't find the thread about our musical highlight / best moment, but that was it for me.

Yeah. A future open mic performance MIGHT be an option, but what made Saturday night comfortable for me was the distinct lack of anything even resembling a microphone. |

But seriously Steve, this guy's voice was phenomenal. I can't believe he's not famous. |

Location: Tennessee | My dad owned and played the accordian and I owned and played a tenor banjo (back in the day). Seriously. Everyone always applauded quite loudly and quite vigorously whenever we stopped playing. Bicycle Built For Two was our encore number but we never seemed to get to it.
Congrats on the great weekend Muzz. Standing On A Rock is a fun song to play with a crowd and harmonicas. |
