I have placed 5 Peppino D'Agostino tunes on my web site... Here ... In order of difficulty

The Challenge is - Work on them and record yourself... I'll post the recordings and we can all vote on who played the best!!

Also PLEASE note on Desert Flower... the 1st several Measures are LEFT HAND ONLY... you Pluck the string with finger on left hand and then Hammer on the note!!!!
Examples are at Old Playing and Recordings I'll even re-do my recordings as it aint fair to use older stuff when I was playing more frequently ;) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | If you tell me that "It Doesn't..." is doable in a week with dedicated practice, that will give me a frame of reference. Sort of like when the ski shop employee told me they considered an intermediate skier to be someone who skis 50 days a year or more. |

Location: Just outside Dallas, TX | You'll find with Croce... 1st practice moving between the chord shapes so your left hand knows where to go...
Then add the right picking...
Depending on how often you play and how quickly you can change chords (been playing 33+ years) a week playing an hour each day building on what you did the last day should get you to a passable likeness of the song
Personally I prefer Photographs and Memories (only because of the interesting G chord shapes and pull offs) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Thanks. I've been playing for over 33 years, too, but for about 25 of them I may not have practiced an hour a year. An hour a day is more than I usually can muster now, but it picks up a bit in the winter. I'm not satisfied with a "passable likeness", so I'll drone away on it for months, with numerous breaks for various distractions. I think I do a more than passable P&M. Seems like that was one of the easiest for me to learn, maybe because I did it off the Huttlinger dvd. Hard Way Every Time might be the easiest out there. Figured out the intro and then just watched the Croce dvd. He recorded it with a capo, but did it live without a capo. |

Location: Marlton, NJ | I'm giving it a go. I'm working on "Born In the Sea". It's the only one in standard tuning. I also tuned one of my guitars to Gm for "A Glimpse of the Past". It's got a really cool sound.
I don't have a timeframe for finishing "Born.." but I think it's coming out nicely. |

Lovely, will be working on this, can pretty much play this as is just sight reading the TAB. Top tune.
- A Glimpse of Times Past
Never used this particular tuning so into the "to learn" pile it goes. Again a lovely piece, nice dischordance...
-Close to Heaven
Another tuning I've never used so into the "to learn" pile it goes.
- Desert Flower
I like to memorise all the pieces I learn, I think this falls into a slightly harder category for the simple reason it'll be harded to memorise but again --> "to learn".
- Mother's Tears
Same as Desert Flower, i.e. harder to memorise but will learn!
I would say the first three are all pretty easier and good for a beginner/intermediate fingerstyle guitarist. The last two require a little more attention but not impossible. Thanks again!!! Anymore to share? |

I met him at a show in Va... he was nice enuff to give me the sheet music to several songs after he heard what I spent on one of his CDs from E-Bay (been out of circulation for 5+ years)... After he picked his jaw up from the floor....
Are you sure you hit the correct 1st string tuning?? I play my recording against his and can't hear the difference |

Location: Chicago | How about "Guardian Angel" Dweez? It fits this thread better because it sorks as a SWEET fingerstyle exercise. Here is a TAB of the tune . And here is a nice YouTube demo of the introductory part done that way on a nylon. Try it! And if you have a jam buddy, have him take the lead and rock out on the 3/4 chord jam: Em - D - C7 - F- - -Am - G - C7 - B7 with that wicked lead line to kick it off. Here an early version of the Guitar Trio playing a a RIDICULOUSLY fast version. |

My fingerstyle is more in the tame world of Bruce Cockburn, Adrian Legg, Stefan Grossman, David Qualey, Doug Smith, Jim Goodin, Richard Gilewitz, Peppino D'Agostino, John Renbourn et al.

Location: Chicago | That's a beautiful set of tunes, Dweezil. I especially liked the low-tuned groove of "Foxglove": You may be amused to know that I actually find some of the McLaughin chordal stuff EASIER to do finger-style than the psycho cross-picking he's cooked up.
BTW that walnut Elite is stunning. Never saw one like that, anywhere.... |

Whislt the Walnut has made great friends with the 84C it still pines for it's true love : the 12 string. I would not be a very good father it I didn't find one of these for it...

The 1537 is well known to be the best wood top Ovation they made, kinda a wood topped Adamas if you like. IT'S A TONE MONSTER.
The Walnut is SSB and has a much darker tone. |

Born In The Sea. Can now play it flawlessly at performance speed. Lovely tune, pretty straight forward apart from a couple of tricky left hand fingerings required to play it correctly, i.e to let the strings ring out as he does. Will get round to recording it at some point. How is everyone else getting on?

I've been working on Born In The Sea since the challenge started and all I can say is that there are good days and bad. I have it memorized, which for me is usually as difficult as playing it. I'm very happy that I got this far with it. |

Location: Just outside Dallas, TX | Dweez is right... They "SOUND" difficult... but look at the actual music... Glimpse is simple many Arpeggios... And Born in the Sea is a simple Pick pattern with rarely 2 strings played at the same time...
Thnks Dweezil... I try the updates when I can pull out the fiddle and the 4 Yo doesn't see (she tends to want to "PLAY" it like a percussion instrument whenever I have it... |

You have it scored as a crotchet, it's more like a dotted minim tied to another minim (i.e. 5 beats not 1).
Seriously thanks for bringing these tunes to my attention but perhaps the challenge should have been correct these transcriptions and then record them ;) |

Location: Brighty in Blighty | I use Guitar Pro, whilst it can import Power Tab it cannot export Power Tab, it can export as
Guitar Pro, MIDI, ASCII, MusicXML, PDF, WAV & BMP.
If Power Tab cannot import any of those then it's a case of typing it in from the PDF. |
