I played one here at Guitar Center. I think it may be the best sounding non-USA guitar Ovation makes. Your opinion is the only one that matters, though.

I like the couple Ultras that I was able to test drive.
I think that sound and quality wise they are closer to a USA made Ovation than the off shore Celebrity models.
I would say go for it with one qualification. Lately there has been some awesome deals on some models made 100% in USA. You owe yourself the chance to try to find one of those deals out there, if they are still around.

And.... welcome.

Welcome!

Never played one of these things, but depending on which color you get these are very pretty guitars.

If you are buying from a brick-n-mortar store make them give you a case.
Imports generally do not come with cases, which keeps the price low...
But if you can hit them up for a case, or at least a big discount on a case, you should do that.

And once you get it, we want photos and a review. :D

Unfortunately, my friends have discouraged me on gettin an ovation guitar because of the back, which makes it uncomfortable to play as itmay slide off from your body..
Any idea on how to solve this prob...?

This one has a contour bowl - it will not slide away from your body, sitting or standing. I have one with a contour bowl and it is very comfortable and stable.

Excellent advice, Mark, worthy of Dave. +1 on that.

Simiwaco, have you tried playing one and making your own decision about it? Unless you plan on having your friends play it for you, too...

Welcome. Your "friends" sound like they're repeating blather they heard others say, without ever trying to find out for themselves if it's true or not.

You're the one who's gonna be playing your guitar. Try it it out in the acoustic room, sitting down and standing up with a strap. And not just a few chord strums. Play that sucker like you're on stage.

If you do wind up getting it, once your "friends" hear you play it, and get a chance to play it themselves, I'll bet they'll start looking for Ovations, too.

It's all subjective. Buy and play what feels best to you. Some people indeed don't like the way an Ovation guitar feels in their hands. Some people don't like the way wooden box guitars feel in their hands. Some people don't like anything at all. I'm way past "this" is better than "that" blah blah blah.

Folks here on this forum will tell you your friends are full of crap and Ovations are gods gift to the world, etc. That's why this is called the Ovation FAN Club. Shop around with your eyes, ears, hands and wallet and buy what YOU think is the best guitar for you. You may decide on an Ovation, or maybe something else. Doesn't matter as long as YOU are happy.

I was in a Guitar Center on Saturday and ended up talking with a young guy who's a salesman. Nice guy and we visited about guitars for about 10 minutes. I commented that I had my 87C in the car and he ended up playing it. With a big grin he said that it was way better than any Ovation they had in the store.

He probably isn't going to rush out and buy one, but it's important to keep an open mind. Dave's right. Play a lot of different guitars and buy the guitar that's right for you, not your friends. If all they know is what they've heard, or played in a GC, then they don't know much. Hell, you might decide that a Taylor is best for you.......

I'm suprised no one mentioned the fact that at least the newer ones have like an anti-skid built in between the upper and lower bouts that keep them in place when playing sitting down.
At least my 1771LX's do.
See the photo below

If you are interested I have a 1771LX for sale new w/case. Its in the FS forum but I may be able to do better for you & its american made.

Some people have trouble getting used to the bowl.
Personally, I have trouble getting used to the corners on a wood box. (yes, I still have one)
The contour bowl is specifically designed to work around people's beer-guts.
After playing regular bowls, it took me awhile to get used to the contour-bowls...
And they seem strange when I stand... So I don't stand.

Like Dave sez, buy what you think is best for you.
The bias of other people should not matter in guitars, motorcycles, or anything for that matter.
Alot of people don't like Ovations... That's cool.
I don't like anchovies... Some folks do.

[Also, there is a smug satisfaction in having a guitar everyone hates  ]

And you can buy those anti-skid thingies on ebay (self-adhesive), too. I got one and it works great.

I just don't even get where this rumor started. I never heard it until recently and thought maybe it was only for the super shallow bowls, but they put the anti-skid patch on some of the early deep bowls. They always fit me better than the box guitars. I'd cut a groove by my armpit with those.

It's a contour bowl. Slippage is not an issue. It was designed out of the product.

How come all the previous posters didn't even notice that the guitar in question is a contour? Well spotted Stonebobbo, at least someone's awake.

+1 Contour bowl is not going anywhere, sticks like s*&t to a blanket when you're sitting down.

I find standing with the contour bowl feels a bit weird, but it holds the face of the guitar nice and vertical, which makes playing more comfortable for both left and right hand. I thought you'd given up drinking OMA, have you relapsed since the Election result?

I too had friends who mocked my plastic guitar, but .... every occation i've heard an ovation up on stage with the martin/gibson/guild folks - who do you think put's em all to shame - I'll give you a hint - it ain't plastic, but it aint wood either. I am always AMAZED how good a plugged in ovation is.

also, if you have a gut - it may conflict with the roundness of the ovation, so good reason to diet :)

When I got my first Ovation two years ago, it was a mid bowl. It felt a bit strange and like to tip up, especially when standing. Then someone mentioned that they do that when you hug it too hard with the strumming arm. Viola, problem 99% solved.

It still rolled a little bit up, but I got used to it after a couple of weeks.

I tried a contour bowl at the Guitar Center last year. Early in the summer one of my daughters bought a 2078T with the contour bowl. They sure felt odd, unlike a "normal" Ovation roundback.

Then, Al made me buy a 2007 Collectors with the contour bowl. It felt kinda strange at first. It didn't roll face up at all. It was easier on the fretting hand due to less wrist angle, but felt different, especially when standing.

It took a couple of weeks, but then it felt completely normal.

Moral of the story, both bowls will feel totally normal after you play them a bit.

Yeah, that's my excuse. Ever since I bought the contour bowl...no, ever since I started thinking about a contour bowl, I've been eating and drinking and sticking out my gut more. It's all Al's fault.

Monday can't get here fast enough! That's the day UPS says they will delivery my new 2178. MF is clearing them out and I couldn't resist the temptation.
There doesn't seem to be a lot out on the web about them. It does seem to be a new model that MF is clearing out. I wonder if Ovation is dropping them already? Glad I found this site.
I'm looking forward to getting to know y'all and learn more about Ovation guitars. (actually I had an Ovation Trekker a few years ago.)

I have thought about this a bunch while trying to get information on the 2171...
They are moving production of Elites and Balladeers to Korea.
The 2078LX is about the same as the 2178.
And the 2771LX is very similar to the 2171.
The major difference being about $200-$400 (depending on the store).

If they are not gonna build Elites and Balladeers in the US,
it would not make sense to assemble Ultras in the US...
Or, at least not those models.

(Anybody with a better thought, please share it. :D )
