This is my first post, so, hello fellow Ovation players! I have an Elite Standard and love it. My question, however, concerns the CC057 I just bought for my daughter. Yes, it's the Dobro-grade action (everything else is great). I removed the 2 shims, and the resulting fret buzz made me reinstall one of them. The action still seems high (though she isn't complaining). My question is, can the zero-shim fret buzz be eliminated with truss-rod adjustment? Also, it seems like the nut is high and a contributor to 1st fret action issues. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here I am a newbie, and already helpin' out.

Check the neck relief by depressing the E strings at the 1st and 13th fret (on an Ovation anyway). Relief at about the 6th or 7th fret ought to be from .005 to about .010 inches when the guitar is at standard pitch. If you need to make adjustment, do it with the strings nearly all the way slack, then retune to pitch and recheck the relief.

Once the relief is set correctly, you can try to adjust the shims to get the action where you want it.

Remember, chaning string gauge (or sometimes even same gauge, different brands) may effect the neck adjustment.

Ok, somebody shoot me if I got that wrong!

That's obviously the reason he's getting action.

I usually use the G string instead.

Sorry Charlie  Not so sure about the 13th fret.

You just hit them at the wrong moon phase.

In the manual (came with or at the Ovation guitars site) it gives the measurements at the 12th fret for the 1 and 6 E strings to the top of the fret with the specific amount of shims removed. I'd only adjust the neck if these were off. You might find the nut height in there as well.

And for the record - Isn't the action better when there are no strings attached?

Right - action measured at the 12th fret, releif measured when pressing fret 1 and 13 simultaniously (creating a straight line from which to measure releif).

Thing that is new to me there, is that on say... a Fender Tele its first and last fret (22). Different truss rod/neck attachment scenario.

I would take it to someone & have it worked over. I took in a Korean 12 with a really high action & for $50 they made it better for the first few frets. Having the nut cut down & some other things they did got it from playing lousey everywhere to just crappy past the 4th or 5th fret. For a beginner only using the first position the same treatment would probably improve your daughters guitar quite a bit.
