For years I've been playing an old Yamaha that I borrowed from a buddy. It's time to upgrade and I know I want an Ovation. I don't have alot to spend and I notice Ovation makes the Applause AA21 which appears to sell for $180 to $200. Is this a decent guitar in terms of playability, sound, and longevity?

You might be better served to get a used Celebrity or one of the Ovation USA models. Others will have more specifics, but for the price of a new applause (maybe a little more) you could own a much much better quality and sounding instrument.

Check the For Sale section of this site. A few weeks back some members were selling balladeers and artists for $250 or something like that. Buying new is probably not the best thing in your case. Dave

If you can swing a little more, a used U.S.-made Ovation would be better, but the Applause is not total trash. I played one at a shop here in the Detroit area before Christmas and it is OK. Action was good, sound was good, too(it's a deep bowl), just not up to the level of a U.S.-made Ovation guitar. It does NOT have any electronics, though, if that matters.

Make sure that you can play it before buying to insure you are satisfied with the action and the sound of the particular guitar before putting down the money. There is a little more variability in the cheaper guitars. Good luck.
