Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I've been long overdue to get my gear insured. Several different people from different walks of my life have asked me in the last 2 weeks if all of my guitars are insured. The message is a little too coincidental for me.
The problem I've had, each time I start looking into it, I get stumped in the specific process. As I understand it, the stuff wouldn't be covered under regular renter's insurance (i'm in an apartment), especially since I play out "professionally", and I have to have the stuff appraised. I don't know where to start looking for either-insurance or appraisals, so if anyone has any specifics it would help. Some musician unions offer gear insurance (as I've searched on google), but I have to join them and pay regular dues.
I'm not sure how I'd get my stuff appraised..I'd need to rent a truck to load it up and take it to an appraisor! And I'm sure that's a steep fee for the appraisals. I asked around at local stores, but they don't do that stuff.
Any suggestions? I have to get on this and make it happen-it's been way too long. I bet some other members are in need of getting their gear insured too...so if anyone has any specifics...names of appraisors, companies that insure guitars...anything would be a help.

Location: Scotland | Johnny, I use a music industry specialist, they understand they situation much better than general insurers, and in my case actually cost less. I have 2 levels of insurance, I'm covered on the road for gear that goes out, & covered at home for the lot, plus I have half a million public liabilty cover. The AMF should have contacts for specialist companies
Some domestic insurance companies will insure instruments & sound gear, but a lot of their small print & get-out clauses don't make any sense if you're a working musician. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | I use Heritage Insurance Company. They're in Pa and specialize in instruments. 1-800-289-8837 and ask for Joan Gallo. They cover the collection whether it's in my house or out working somewhere. |
