Location: Phoenix AZ | Not sure who started this, but it was a nice idea. I've got a few "now" photos in the gallery, but here are the oldest "then" photos I could find. My GAS started in 1971.
Here's me playing my very first Ovation. It's a '71 Balladeer that I got brand new for $169. at Red Bank Music on Hwy35 in Neptune NJ. It has the old Kluson tuners and narrow headstock with thick lip. Also has the winged bridge. You'll notice I had already upgraded to GC truss rod covers. I used to write to Jim Hennessey at Ovation about once a week asking for stuff. I'd put a few dollars in the envelope to cover shipping and Jim would send me all kinds of stuff (and spend my dollars on cigarettes).
Here is a photo from '72 of me playing a duet with Glen Campbell. Well, actually it's my Glen Campbell cardboard standup. I still have it (and have been offered a LOT of money for it). I'm playing my '71 Balladeer, although by that time I had also gotten my first Thunderhead. Glen is playing Wayne's guitar.

I was cleaning my desk ( and anyone that really knows me knows that it is just moving one big pile over to the next ) and I found these two photos. they are old worn and faded but were the photos we took for a press kit back in 80 or 81 or 82 I forget now. It was from my "new wave" band Forgien bodies. Sorry no O's in the pic, at that time I was the "ambience" person in the band, I sat on a stool playing a LP with a semi circle of about 8 pedals for different effects. I also had an arp axxe that I used to "play" I cannot play keys but damn I could make great synth noises on it.....oh the late 70's and 80's what fun times.
the name of the band was forgien bodies...
don't be surprised if the link does not work.
notice that this is a rare NO beard photo. I think I was going for that clean shaven look for about 8 or 9 months there....

Location: Phoenix AZ | Wayne. Believe it or not I was offered $200 for the cardboard GC sometime in the early 80's, which is like $400 today. I'm not sure who was crazier - the guy who offered that much money or the guy who turned it down! Unfortunately it got a little water damaged during a home move about 15 years ago (damn leaky U-Haul). It's the same photo that's on the catalog, so you're not really missing anything. Dave |

Somewhere, I have some pics of myself (circa 1971) "dueting" with GC also. I had that same cardboard stand up. Notice I said "had"... Mine was the tragic victim of a spring cleaning incident at my parents house about twelve years ago. Still hurts when I think about it! :(
BTW, my first Ovation was also a Standard Balladeer, except mine didn't have the winged bridge. And, I too, used to correspond with Jim Hennessey on a fairly regular basis.
Thanks for sharing your pictures and memories. For me it was like looking back at my own early teen years!

Yes, I do remember that.
I wasn't totally sure (until today) if that was you I had corresponded with, but when I saw your picture, I kinda put two and two together. After all, there couldn't have been too many of those things floating around in people's living rooms back then! :)
I'll try to find my old pics--and if I can ever figure out how to upload them--I'll post 'em!

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | This is my earliest pic with my first Ovation which, like Jeff and Dave, was a standard Balladeer, my first decent guitar. This would have been taken in '72-'73. The other guys in the pic are my brothers and the gal is my cousin. I'm sure all those Campbellian hairdos are a total coincidence! :) We used to do the variety show circuit around that time.
This is my "now" pic taken this morning. This guitar is the '68 GC Deluxe Balladeer that Glen is wailing on in his cardboard jam session with Dave shown above.
Come on guys, dig out those old pics!

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | Paul, the GC sounds killer...has a particularly punchy midrange and great sustain. Made in the days before "Plug-It-In" was even thought of, let alone the main goal. It is much like an old Martin, but I guess that is the way they were designed to sound, using J Rickard's old pre-war D-45 as a reference. Probably doesn't nail that sound exactly, but the GC is worth about $150,000 less, so it's close enough!
Although the pic looks dark, the top color has actually stayed pretty light over the years. The only thing not original is the truss rod cover...it had been swapped out so I replaced it with a newer one, courtesy of K Keller.

Location: SoCal | My "then" was from 1973. I was 18 and had just graduated from high school. This was a family reunion of all our cousins. The guitar was a 1972 Artist that I had bought with my own cash the fall of 1972. Next to me is my older sister Ann, my Mom, and Uncle Thomse (who gave me the old Martin that's about 3 feet away from me right now).
The now pic is from Xmas 2003. I'm 30 years older and the guitar is a 1968 Deluxe Balladeer. Mom is still happy when I play.

Location: Fort Worth, Texas | Create a Gallery in the Member's Section, post your images to there. Then you can use those to post to the bulletin board. When you have your image up in the gallery, right click on it and go to properties, you can highlight and copy the Address(URL)...
I find it helps to open two Internet Explorers (or your browser of choice!)...

Location: SoCal | From the look of the pic, this would have been about 1982, 83, when Jerry was in his flat pick phase. Luckily for all fingerpickers, he went back to using a thumbpick.
Of course then you get fingerpickers like me who use a flat pick and fingers..... |
