I recently saw a 1655 CCustom Balladeer 12 string on eBay. I own a 1755 and it appears identical. Ovation changed the model number from 1655 to 1755 starting in 1985. What was the reason for the model number change? Did it have something to do with the depth of the bowl? Does the model number change also apply to the difference between the 1611/1612/1617/1619 and 1711/1712/1717/1719 models?

I would assume it's the bowl depth.

I think it's the electronics.

I looked at the photos again and I think that Paul is correct. My 1755 has the FET-24 equalizer whereas the 1655 has the volume control only.

Give Paul the prize, he's right. But then again you'd expect a crackerjack PI to be able to solve these types of mysteries.
