Location: New South Wales, Australia | Played with my band at my sister-in-law's 40th last night and had a great night. The gig was at an outside area of a local club and it was a perfect place for it. Nice sunny afternoon and evening, plenty of room for the kids to run around, lots of food.....and free beer for the band
We finished our first set at about 7.45 and, whilst taking full advantage of the aforementioned free beer, were politely informed by management that the police had been called by someone living near the club, complaining about the noise.
Apparently the coppers were slightly embarrassed to be called out at that early time of the evening but said they had to respond to the call.
It was like waving a red rag at a bull :D We turned everything up to 11 after that. I don't mind quietening down when it gets late in respect to nearby residents..but is 7.45 (in the summertime) to early to be calling the law? The sun hadn't even gone down!!! |

BTW, I salute your measured response. |

They only spoke with staff but I would've loved to have had a chat with them and maybe taken a couple of photos with them in front of our stage setup |

The only problem with kids on the lawn is the screaming when you mow.
You know your in trouble when your wife calls the cops.

Hey, I'm too old, and I have to have it loud to hear it! That reminds me of a gig that we did one Christmas season for one of our local country clubs. About 2/3 of the way through the 1st set this old dude (older than me), who had been putting in some serious effort at the open bar, comes up and shouts, "Y"all gotta turn that music DOWN!! Y'all got old people in here!". Then about 2 songs later, up comes another old dude, who's open bar activities were at least as assiduous as the first guy's, comes up and shouts, "Y"all gotta turn that music UP!! Y'all got old people in here!".
I figured we had it just right. |

| Turn the speakers right at em. I think 11:00 is a fair time on a work night. Friday's and Saturday's are later.
Funny thing is if whomever called would lighten up and go have a beer they'd a had a good time. |

Location: Jet City | Great story, that brings back some memories!
The first metal band I was in, way back in the early 80's was called Black Angel.
I don't know if we ever made it through an entire gig aside from battle of the bands (Logan High School in Union City, we took 2nd place, it was rigged ;) ) without being unplugged at some point.
3 in particular were memorable...
1. The biker block party: Was all Angels, and it was some big shot in the club who had a birthday. They had a big huge block party and even got the San Leandro Police to allow them to block the streets. we got to the 4th song when the cops showed (Marshall JCM 800s turned to 11!) The last song we were playing was called "Dungeons of Death", a very not-so-nice song and Chris our singer walked off the stage at the last note, but but not before he yelled F* YOU into the PA with his foot on eternal repeat on the Boss digital delay. It went on and on for several minutes before they figured out how to stop it.
2. The Zucchini Festival in Hayward, CA: Was a big city park. We told them we were a new wave band so we could get the gig. Apparently, we drowned out the other band on the other side of the park (had to be 1/4 mile away). They unplugged us. We were not invited to subsequent Festivals. I think they still do them today, but back then it was like the 2nd annual one or something.
3. Saving the best for last, the horse burger story: We had been renting a barn that had been converted into a practice pad/studio, on Mission Blvd just north of Niles Canyon. There were still rural areas there back then. We actually shared space with another group, can't remember their names, but Kevin Carlson from Aldo Nova was in the band and I always sneaked and used his Dean Markley Stack. Anyhow, we decided to throw a party/show one night. The place was pretty cool and had risers going up sort of like bleachers for the crowd, so it was just like doing a show in a club. Someone who showed up didn't shut the gate out front and one of the horses wandered out on to Mission Blvd and was slaughtered by a semi. Gig cut short. No more practice space. The band dispersed soon after.
Welcome to the club watto! And here you are an old due gettin the cops called! |

This place we played is also right next to the local airport so I'm sure the local residents have plenty of things to complain about.
During our second set we were buzzed by a chopper which was waiting to land I presume, and for a moment I thought the noise was coming from the PA. A well-lubricated reveller yelled out..."Holy shit..they've called in the air force!!" |

Maybe they have an ongoing dispute with the venue and were making a point? Not much of point at 7:45. If you need it to be quiet before midnight you probably shouldn't live near a club. That's what suburbs are for. Downtown Austin had a similar issue years and years ago. Yuppies started moving into the downtown area and then started complaining that the clubs on 6th St were too loud. (For those who don't know - the 6th St district is the live music district in Austin.) To make a long story short(ish) - they were unsuccessful at getting the clubs to turn it down. It's kinda like buying a house near an Air Force Base and then complaining about the planes flying at night. There's just not a lot of general sympathy for that kind of thing. Now if OZ had been burning it up in a suburban backyard the complainers might have had a beef (but not, IMHO, at 7:45). |

Actually, I will be burning it up in suburbia in a couple of weeks but it's for a Xmas street/block party. So most of the residents will be there. But if we try real hard, we might be able to upset someone. Maybe there's still some yuppies left around here :D |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | We did a private party gig a few years back up in Central City in a big space used by the Central City Opera for rehearsals. Unbeknownst to us, there was a gallery above the space with an assortment of pottery and sculptures arranged in what were apparently not very well secured displays. The first time we did a sound check with (moderately) high volume, some official looking folks came scrambling down from the gallery making a huge fuss. It seems that as the floor rattled a bit, a few thousand dollars worth of plates, bowls and assorted sundry had fallen to the floor. |
