Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Typhoon Fretless Bass ? I think a few more than 8 were made, but no matter, nice Bass. Worth? In the past few years seen them anywhere from $350 to $900. Like all Ovations... just depends on the buyer. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | My basis for saying "fretless" was that is the model number for the Fretless. So maybe our data is wrong. But... I just checked my Fretless and this is the exact same model number 1216-4 hmmmmmmm If someone can clarify the model numbers on their Typhoons that would be appreciated. |

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | The original typhoon (1967-1968) had no model number on the label. It simply said typhoon on the label.Soon after(late 68 to early 69)typhoon had model #
Typhoon 2 model-1222
Typhoon 3( fretless) model 1223
later in late 1969 to early 1970
Typhoon 2 model-1222
Typhoon 4 (fretless) model 1216
later in 1970 to 1972 (final production of storms.)
Typhoon 4 fretless model-1216
Typhoon 5 fretted model-1217
So,the fretless was model 1216.This would mean three things.
1 someone installed frets on this bass
2 they changed necks at some point
3 the wrong label was installed at the factory |

Location: San Bernardino, California | If I remember right the fretless ones had the pickup selector switch in the bass bout and the fretted ones had it in the treble bout. |

I mentioned that I thought I had seen an Ovation on the video about the Carpenters and somebody said they thought it was a Typhoon Bass. That picture looks like what I saw a fleeting glimpse of.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I just checked my Typhoons and the fretted ones all have the selector in the lower bout, fretless in the upper. This is the first one I have seen with the bridge cover, but also noticed that the Fretless I have is the only one with this style bridge. Interesting.
What is the extra switch on yours for? Should (term used loosely) be 2 tone and 2 Vol controls? |

Location: Phoenix AZ | The first generation Typhoons had the small body, trapeze tail piece, 3 knobs, and toggle on the lower bout. The second generation Typhoons (like the one in this picture) used the same larger bodies as the other Storms (Thead and Tornado), had had 4 knobs and stop tail piece with cover. There wwre a hell of a lot more than 8 of these made. Dave |
