A while back, posting on why Paul Hebert's 1619 had a gold Ovation logo on headstock v. inlaid.

Check out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3712746039&category=33029

Paul's, by serial number, indicates 1979 yet seller indicated bought in 1978. Paul's has the carved truss cover and bridge.

This one on eBay was sold new in 1978 (but serial no. 052047 indicates 1975). Note gold logo, non carved truss rod cover and bridge. Also, vol only - not the stacked vol/tone on Paul's. Black bowl v. the brown bowl on Paul's.

Interesting...haven't seen pictures of the 1974-1978 models to compare with. My 1982 #1619 doesn't have the truss rod cover but has the carved bridge and brown bowl. Don't know if the fact that Paul's and mine are dark sunburst is a factor in the color of bowl. I have seen where some have said brown on dark sunburst, black on natural - yet the 30th Anniv (natural) is brown bowl.

There will always be the exception, but in general Natural finish guitars got brown bowl, while Black and Sunburst finish got black bowl. Dave

I have no doubt that in the 1970's (especially about 1974-76), Ovation was going through a time of change in their guitars. The Custom Legend was introduced and along with the fancy appointments, had the new A bracing pattern that came from the Adamas research.

And I suspect that the CL didn't spring forth in it final form, but took several years to mature. The problem for us collectors is that, as far as I can tell, there are no catalogs from that time. I've got 2 1972 catalogs, but then nothing until 1977 (silver covered "Guitar of the Stars"). If somebody has something from 1974-76, let us know.

The 1658 that I bought in 1981 was dark sun burst and brown bowl; my 1980-1981 #1658 (natural) in for repair is brown bowl; Hebert's and my 1619's are dark sunburst with brown bowls; my 1985 #1659 is dark sunburst with brown bowl; my 1763 Classic is natural with brown bowl; my 1118 GC is dark sunburst brown bowl.

Tony, you're right. Now I think about it, I have seen many sunburst guitars with brown bowls. Maybe it was only the black tops that got black bowls. Wait a minute, my 1118 is natural and has a black bowl. ARRRGH. There's no standards! I guess in the 70's Kaman was not ISO-9000 certified. Dave

What surprised me about the eBay listing was the gold headstock logo.

In addition, the non-carved but inlaid on bridge and truss rod cover.

Only picture I had seen of a pre-1978 Custom Legend was Paul McCartney (? 1974)and the picture didn't show that type of detail.
