Well I'm sure it's not news to most everyone but I just saw one on Elderly's website. Very cool. For under $150, it would be cool have around.

I just bought one off of ebay for $71.00 (I probably paid to much!!!) It's an acoustic only Applause just like the one Cliff had at the Thursday night jam in the hotel lobby! I got one just to noodle around on 'cause I enjoyed trying to play Cliff's that night and maybe who knows Cliff and I MIGHT want to do a "Tiptoe Thru The Tulips" duo next year!!! (that idea in it's self ought to sell out next year!! - what'ya think, Cliff? :D I'll even let you be Miss Vicki!!)

Interesting website......... ;)

Sounds like it was not a bad deal.

They do look like they can be fun with a group.

What is the tuning on a ukele?

Isn't a baritone uke very similar to a tenor guitar? Same tuning, similar pitch?

In talking to a guy who plays alot of uke, he said it makes a lot of sense 4 fingers - four strings!

I believe this is correct:
(bass to treble)
Tenor uke: GCEA
Tenor guitar: CGDA or GDAE

Brad, I've seen the Applause ukes at Elderly on several occasions, played them a couple of times, keep thinking I'm going to get one. Maybe after I get up to speed on my mandolin. For the moment, I think it's better to get decent at one instrument(guitar), than half-a$$ed at three(guitar, mandolin and uke).

Tony is correct on the tuning....my Mel Bay book "Fun With The Ukekele" gives that tuning, GCEA. Git yer felt picks and off you go. Looking at the chord patterns in the book, they look awfully similar to guitar chords.

On the site that Tony gave, above, the G tuning for a baritone uke is given as D G B E.

I don't think the Applause ukes are baritone. I'm certainly not up on my uke types, but I think it is a tenor. It is whatever the "standard-size" type is.

Gave a Baritone Uke to a retiring Manager of mine a few years back. Told him it was the "Big Gun" of the Ukes. The purpose was now that he was retired, to do things he hadn't before. He was also selling his house and him and his wife were running off in their RV so it made a lot more sense than a piano!

Kind of fun instrument and strung like a guitar. The only song I knew was "Somewhere over the rainbow/Wonderful World".

Did you get that from the soundtrack of "Finding Forrester"??? I LOVE that arrangement!!!
If you can, can you e-mail me the chords??
I'd really appreciate it!!

The Applause that I have is in fact a soprano (living in Jersey, it HAD to be! :-) and it is tuned GCEA. I usually just sit in the chair while watching TV and doing the "plnka-plink". I can't play it for shit, but it IS good fun!

Two thins:

first of all - good job on the web search and spelling on Brudda Iz - considering the trouble most Jerseyites (or is it Jersuits?) have with their vowels... well you understand.

Brudda Iz died of heart failure - go figure - he did put out some lovely tunes and did a lot to promote Island heritage, pride and independance. Big Guy, little Uke - whole lotta love.

2nd - a Pirate friend of mine put together a CD of headbanger music for a co-worker. He slipped in a Tiny Tim tune every 3rd song - hits by TT like Stairway to Heaven, etc. It took a while for the poor guy to figure it out!

I've got the roundhole.
I bought it in a SurfShop on LongBeachIsland here in Jersey. The guy made/sold custom boards, some really nice Hawaiian Shirts and surfwear, and some ukes. He had a LOT of vintage and expensive authentic Hawaiian ukes (lotsa Koa!), but said that the multi-hole electric O'uke was by FAR his favorite!!!

How friggin scientific can you get with a ukelele? My mother bought me one in the 50's and said the proper tuning was "MY DOG HAS FLEAS", then we played every Aurthur Godfrey song we could remember until he fired Mr Larosa. Then we went on to "Sweet Leilaini", "Hawaiin Wedding Song", "Aloha Ohe" and "When Irish Eyes are Smiling", "How are Things in Glockamorrow", "THE WEARING OF THE GREEN", But I digress, it is as good an instrument as any to express a longing for the home shore.

If anyone is looking for a Applause Ukulele, there is one on ebay now just like I just got (UA10-4) for a buy-it-now of $120 (seller will pay shipping)
I lucked out and paid $82.45 total for mine but I didn't get a electronic tuner, carrying case, and assorted picks.....So if you used the BTN you could "justify" the extra $37.55 for the accessories!!! :D

Maybe for next year's jam we all could vote on a Beatles tune to do on the ukulele together!!(I vote for "All you need is Love" or "Here comes the Sun")and to not exclude anyone who doesn't have a uke we could form a Ukulele & Kazoo Band!!(you could even use wax paper around a pocket comb!! - I've done THAT before! ;) )

Aloha. I'm new to this site and actually joined because I know nothing about Applause or Ovation aside from playing a few at Sam Ash. My guitar is a classical La Patrie Collection and I have three ukes (which is why I am here). My ukes are a Martin baritone (tuned DGBE as is normal) and two sopranos, sometimes called standards, tuned GCEA.

This long-winded intro is because I'm looking for a tenor uke and Applause has come out with a 4 string tenor, laminated spruce top, with pick up and eq. I assume it is tuned GCEA, although traditional tenors can be tuned like a baritone, i.e., the top four strings of a guitar.

I would appreciate it if any of you would pass on your impressions of the Applause tenor uke (if any) or what I might expect if I make the leap into the for me unknown. I have heard the Ovation/Applause line has great electronics but are weak when played acoustically. True? False? Does that mean I am committed to an amp? Is the uke neck wide enought to fingerpick easily or is it basically a strummer? I am obviously a newcomer to "plugging in" and I appreciate the insights you can give me.

Mahalo for all your help.

I fondled three different Applause ukes at Elderly today, but decided I have one instrument(mandolin) that I already am not spending any time with, I didn't need two. Still very cute, though.

From the "Ya don't know till ya ask" department:
In the FAQ on the Beatles site, it has a counter for how many of what song has been downloaded. When I open the song and try to save the file to my disc, all I get saved is the link to the web site. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brad

Brad,
I think the counter on the Beatles site is just to let you know which of the Beatles songs are the most popular & downloaded of their songs web wide!! I don't think you can download any of the songs on that site!

Thanks Mike.
My wife was looking over my shoulder while I was on the Beatles site. I could have a Ovation uke for Fathers day if I just say the word.

Go for it Brad, you (and your wife!) will enjoy it!! I'm strumming & plucking on mine right now as I catch up on this weekends post! My wife and I just got in from camping since Friday and I kept her "entertained" (I think) all weekend with my ukulele!! (Tell you how addicted I am to the OFC....been home long enought to unhook the camper from the truck and then run inside to check out the posts I've missed  :D )

I thought that the good thing about the Uke as a second instrument, is that the tuning relationship is like the guitar. So what you learn is applicable to the guitar too. Unlike learning the mandolin, which is tuned like a violin. While I don't have a mando, I've got a samisen, that I rarely play more than a noodle because of this. Besides it's hard to find tab for it. Once upon a time, I made the mistake of telling an okanawan how much I liked her playing, and she just handed it to me! Next time I see her, maybe, I'll give her a uke.
