Adamas CVT or SMT???

Although I'm not a huge fan of either, my suggestion for any pingerpicking guitar would be to get the wider neck. 1-3/4 or 1-7/8. It'll cost you a few bucks more to special order an Adamas with this neck, but it's well worth it in my opinion. Of course there are some nice Ovation models that come standard with the wide neck - Folklore, FD-14, Country Artist and Josh White. For a real fun finger picking guitar keep your eyes open for a '97 Collector Parlor guitar with the wide neck - but you'll have to jump over me to get it ... Dave |

Location: Yucaipa, California | I used to have a typically wide neck Classical (that's what I first studied) but have found that the regular, thinner necks are better for my style... I use a rather strange style of fingerpicking... "3-finger (T,I,M) Scruggs Banjo/Classical/Folk/Tim" style... with occasional strums for emphasis... my hands are on the medium to small range and I have never had any problems fingepicking, but have had trouble reaching the chords with my fret hand when the neck is wider...
... I guess my real question was about the tonal/projection property differences between the CVT and the SMT when fingerpicking....

Location: Scotland | I've used an SMT as my main stage guitar for 3 or 4 years & I'm primarily a fingerstyle player. I have a CVT in stock at the moment & side by side they're different, but there's not much in it, I could happily get my sound from either guitar. |

Let me chastise and assist you if I may. It is obvious that you want a new guitar - but you are also aware that you must pick one, and only one, for the opportunity may not come again for some time. You want to make a careful decision and select a very special instrument that will be cherished and used well. It should compare well to your Redwood Collector as well.
And you want your wife to like it too!
You are literally jumping from the bedroom of one possibility to the next. Your mind is racing with the possibilities and potentials. You are cross examining and analysing constantly. You're a mess!
Been there, done that, lost the window!
You want something special. My suggestions are:
An Adamas 6 string with a textured top and as deep a bowl as possible. See Lost Vintage.
A 1996 Ovation Elite 1768 "Book" Guitar. See Lost vintage and Ted Brown in Tacoma.
A 30th Anniversary Custom Legend. See Lost Vintage.
Order a Custom 1778-4 LX. And don't forget to tip "Mother".
Unless you really want a case of the sweats and to be institutionalized stay away from getting another "Collector". It is a lot like eating one potato chip - because you can't have them all.
I would say "Book" or Adamas!

Location: Warren,Pa. | It seems like you guys have lost track of the original question. I love it!!! It's so much fun to read this stuff. A couple of years ago, I was in the market for an Adamas. So I called Kim Keller and asked him about the difference in sound between the SMT and CVT. He said the only real difference between the two, practically speaking, was the price! It's probably not something the company would like to hear Kim saying, so I'll deny he said it if they ask. |

I would think of the ebony bridge as an upgrade to the trim options. For a little more $$$ you get more customer satisfaction.

There is supposed to be more balanced tone (rythym players)from the SMT and a "brighter" tone (Lead players?) from the CVT. That's what I got out of the Adamas site.

Location: Florida | Can only tell you that the pictures on the web dont do em justice - either the SMT or CVT. The CVT is closer (but not real close) to the real thing. The SMT RR finish is quite nearly black - VERY deep red, with highlights of "grain" that sorta sparkle in direct lighting. |

| Hi all, I just purchased new w597 natural graphite Adamas. I never tried a smt, but this guitar is just beautiful (ive owned alot of nice guitars to compare) It has a beautiful tone, neck is perfect. I put some 11-46 strings and its very comfortable to play, and seems to intone a little better up the neck. The electronics/tuner are great, sound super thru my aer alpha amp. I play in a jazz plectrum style mainly but it seems like it would be great for fingerpicking. Its beautiful to look at too!
This guitar is made to plug in! I know it didnt answer your question other than to say the cvt is wonderful

Location: Converse, Texas | One thing I noticed about the Adamases during all the jam sessions during our wonderful tour weekend was that they sound VERY full and are VERY loud for an acoustic guitar. I was really impressed. One day I'll own one. |
