Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Hi all,
Since my local Guitar Center doesn't have ANY U.S. Ovation products right now, I've been sampling the smorgasboard of the nicer Martin, Gibson, and (ahem) even Taylor products there lately.
I've noticed that the Martin 000-28 (they have an Eric Clapton) has a similar sound (reduced bottom-end, rich mid-range) to my mid-bowl 1777 Legend. And the J-150 and SJ-200 Gibson jumbos have a similar bottom end sound and tone as my deep-bowl 1978-vintage Legend. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

Every Gibson flat top I've ever played, including my SJ that I bought from my brother in '57, has sounded like a politician with a tight sphincter, just unable to loosen up and vibrate for fear it might be mistaken for that awful hillbilly guitar, the Martin. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I had a 000-28EC for a short while (keeping for a friend) and of course compared it frequently to whatever Ovations were around at the time. The Martin was easier playing and more even and balanced tone than any Ovation (1117, 1719, 1768) and had a much more ring and open sound. The Ovations were of course more comfortable to hold and had more volume and projection. The bottom end on the Ovation was deeped. Overall I would have to say that I liked the 000-28 sound very, very much. Dave |

As an owner of both of the guitar types that you mentioned, I would also say that the Ovation "mid bowl" has better acoustic bass projection than the Martin "000". My Martin is an acoustic electric model which is equipped with Fisman electronics and it perfoms well when plugged in. It's smaller and shallower body make it less likely to feed back and prevents the "boomy" bottom. I would say that when plugged in, it compares to a shallow bodied Ovation. Either way, they are both nice guitars. |
