Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | Has anyone found a good way of cleaning or polishing the gloss top of an Ovation? I've tried several polishes but they all seem to leave smudges behind. My guitars get pretty smudged up during gigs and I'd like to find a good way of doing it. Any suggestions? |

Location: SoCal | John, there are whole threads on this subject. There are people who swear that the only thing to use is Dunlop 65 (buy it at music stores), and then there are those of us who use Lemon Pledge (buy it at the market or look in your pantry 'cause your wife already bought some). Search the archives.
But while on the subject of cleaning guitars, this last week end I was changing the strings on my 1537 Elite. When I do that, I also oil the fretboard and bridge, and polish the finish surfaces. I also change the battery (gotta go inside for that). I wanted to clean the plugs 'cause I've gotten some crackling when I'm plugged in and thought that it might be dust. Once I got into the project, I couldn't believe the amount of dust in the guitar (like all of my guitars, it lives on stands), and the fine layer on the inside of the bowl. I was also changing the strings on my Country Artist and found the same thing.
Anybody else go thru this? |

Location: Warrenton, Virginia | Agree with Paul. I use the pledge stuff....seems to work well. I also have always used the fret oil......always good and yes I have always found a thin layer of dust inside the bowl. I take one of those long feather dusters and swirl it around then a can of compressed air works well for blowing out the remainder and also on the electronics. |

My partner Rick was kinda doin' the same procedure on his acoustic (POS Fender :p ) not that long ago. Besides dust he also found . . . . spiders! Evidently, over the course of the Winter spiders had built a couple of nests in the upper bouts of his acoustic! I was somewhat surprised that they survived (or could tolerate it) as we gig just about every weekend.
I got an even BIGGER kick out of it when I found out that the big pussy is "afraid" of spiders!! :D I got an entire NIGHT's worth of "ammunition" out of that one!! As John B can attest, the only thing that Rick & I enjoy more than playing music together is publicly BERATING each other in front of an audience!!! ;) |

Oh my God, that had to be brutal!! I wish I was there.
I can't believe that any self respecting spider would take up residence in that thing. ;) Spiders must like plywood. I can't wait to see him and bust his balls. Maybe I'll bring some plastic spiders with me. |

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | I really like the Dunlop 65. And the cloths that come with eyeglasses are the best for cleaning a guitar. They are so fine that they won't scratch it. You have to be careful what cloth you use when polishing a guitar. You can scratch it up with a rough cloth. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | I've been using Martin guitar polish( by Guardsman ) with the yellowish label(supposed to look like spruce). Had a bottle of Martin polish with a green label once, but it left an oily film behind so I returned it and got this. Works very well, and I use it all the time because I hate to get up and play in front of people with a smudgy guitar. John <>{ |
