Location: Warren,Pa. | Going on vacation soon, and it occurs to me that my '97 Collectors might be the nicest travel guitar in the world. It comes with one of the nicest cases in the world, but maybe also one of the HEAVIEST. I'm looking online for a much lighter alternative, but this is not a standard size guitar...deeper than a classical...different shape. Since I'm probably going to have to buy sight unseen, anyone got any specific suggestions? John <>{ |

These are designed just around the corner from me. The new GX models should be in the USA about now. I had a prototype GX40 with me on the tour in March, and several members who saw it can attest to the quality. |

Location: Wooster, Ohio | The orginal collectors case is so good and would protect the guitar. I would rather live with the weight and have the protection of the original case. With that case nothing could happen to that guitar as you travel.

Steve, you sure are an optimist! If you're flying & check a guitar case anything can happen. I've seen cases a lot stronger than the '97 collectors case with serious damage at the hands of airline baggage handlers. Even if the case does it's job & the guitar comes out unscathed you then potentailly have to deal with missing feet and wrecked hinges, latches or handles. It's just not worth the grief. Because there was no guitar to protect I made the mistake of checking an empty brown Ovation case on the way over to the US in the summer, & the airline damn near destroyed it. Baggage handlers are pond life & the really dont give a flying F*%K about what they throw around. Martin Simpson told me that the latches on one of his Calton cases (which are among the best hardshells money can buy) were so badly buckled while in transit the only way to get into the case was to hacksaw the latches open. I've never had a problem getting hardshells onboard on longhaul, but at least with a gigbag they are more likely to let you get a guitar in the cabin without a fight, especially in the smaller aircraft used on domestic flights |

I think baggage handlers take a hands-on test prior to employment. If they can't break enough luggage, guitar cases, etc. per hour, they are sent to apply for work at UPS until they can do enough damage to warrant bagger handler status.
One thing we've learned while traveling to Mexico & Alaska on various fishing expeditions is that duct tape is your friend. You have to keep it in your carry on in case they want to inspect contents. We take soft luggage folded & placed inside a plastic cooler with enough of our cloths to fill the soft baggage. We get the kind with wheels & the long handle. On the way home we fill the chest with frozen fish & put the clothes in the soft baggage. The first time we made the mistake of taping the top shut & leaving the handles usable, which the baggage flingers promptly ripped off. Now we duct tape ALL handles so there's nothing for them to grab. They still might destroy the contents, but at least you'll still have your handles.
Come to think of it, duct tape would also probably be really handy for controlling a subdued terrorist or the ever present little monster three year old running around the aircraft that doesn't appear to belong to anyone with a friggin brain.
