They said on the radio yesterday that it was the 35th anniversary of the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album. D-a-a-a-a-a-a-mn!!!

A bunch of years ago, I was at a gallery that was exhibiting the photographic works of Henry Diltz. Diltz has shot a LOT of famous (and infamous) rock album covers and portraits. Amidst of the framed prints of Morrison, the Doors, Zevon, Mitchell, Baez, and other luminary musical icons, was one print that I wanted . . . . . . badly.

It was a nicely framed print of Messrs. C S & N taken during the same "shoot" as the first album cover. They were sitting on that same ratty couch on that same porch . . . but they were seated in a different order, the camera angle was changed, and the focal point of the portait (them and the couch) was off center - more down and to the right, and more of the peeling clapboard filled the rest of the frame. That area was used as the background for the signatures of the three musicians and Mr. Diltz himself.

Sadly, it was marked "not for sale". Oh well . . .

A lot of people relate the BeachBoys as being the epitome of singing harmonies in rock music.

To me (along with the Beatles), it was these guys . .

And luckily, I get to see 'em do it again this August.

I second that. They are without a doubt the group with the BEST vocal harmony out there. I will never get tired of telling or hearing the story of how Graham Nash blew Crosby and Stills away the first time they sang "You Don't Have to Cry" together.

sorry but without Young it just ain't worth it.

CS&N are hit and miss these days. I saw some concerts where the vocals were just plain BAD.

I just heard a preview of a Crosby/Nash song from a forthcoming new album. Pretty good!

One of the best stories I'd heard was the night before Crosby went in for his liver transplant. Nash was visiting him late at night in his hospital room and the were talking. Both of them were well aware that it might be the last conversation they'd have with each other, but each chose not let the other one on . .

Nash gets up, wishes him luck, fights back the tears and heads for the door. In the doorway, he whips around, points his finger at Crosby and says menacingly:

"Don't you fuckin' LEAVE me with Stills!!!" :D

"Wooden Ships" sent the chills up my spine. Speaking of body parts, on the new tour is Crosby's liver getting separate billing?

Duncan: I don't think it gets it's own "billing", but it might have it's own trailer.

Al: Sadly, I'd have to agree with you on the vocals (nowadays) sometimes.
I've been seeing 'em a bunch of times over the years, and you have to realize that these are guys who're "around" 60 and are singing songs they wrote in their 20's. Even Segovia lost his "fire" after a while. Still, sometimes it good just to enjoy the embers . .

Cliff are you coming to Newport?

I have to travel and will be gone for some if not all of the festival. Call anyway and maybe we can... Spill a beer...

My line is your always welcome... I might not be home, but your welcome to come by.

Don't know yet, Woz . . .

Looks like this Summer (much like the Summer of '00) I'm gonna be the Republicans' "bitch" and really can't plan to go away anywhere until September . . . . . which is my favorite time to go to the beach, anyway. I'll letcha' know . . .

the best concert I ever attended was a year and a half ago when CS&N&Y played down here in Ft Lauderdale.

Opening act? Forget it. The four just walked out, and played for an hour and 45 mintues straight. Short break, then 45 minutes of acoustic. Short break, another 45 minutes of softer electric stuff.
Part of the charm was Booker T & the MG's (Jones, Dunn, etc, all but Cropper) were the backup.

The harmony had me in tears a good portion of the night.

And yes, Crosby is as tenacious as ever, even if he looks like Ray Bolger doing the Cowardly Lion!

Is there any doubt why Young won't play in Alabama or Texas?

CharlieB - That sounds like one of the golden moments!

Most of my early guitar years were spent learning and playing CSN & Y. One litmus test for an Acoustic is to play 4&20.

Suite: Judy blue eyes, Wooden Ships, Carry On,
Deja Vu and Helplessly Hoping are songs that still to this day make me feel the greatness of this artists.

Neil is great and gave them another twist, but I prefer him solo.

The first CSN album is still THE one.

A new DVD of an old PBS concert program just came out for sale. It is called "The Acoustic Concert" and it is just the 3 of them.

The harmonies are not as tight as they used to, but the presence of Crosby and Stills are very powerful.

I had a chance to meet Stephen Stills many years ago in Nashville at Gruhn Guitars and he was very kind and funny.

He speaks Spanish since he lived in Costa Rica as a kid, so we had a nice chat in Spanish and visited a little before more people started to gather and he had to leave. He was doing a round of press and promotion for one of his solo albums.

CSN changed the lives of many musicians, including mine.

I love them and listen to them often and now my 16 year old daughter Katia is into them as well.

"Deja Vu"

I wouldn't write off ANY of these "old folks" yet. I got see Paul McCartney last year and he hasn't lost his voice yet. It also amazed me that someone his age could stay on stage for over 2 1/2 without having to answer the call of nature (I had to go twice).

Also last year I got to see Mike Smith (lead singer, keyboards for the Dave Clark Five) twice. He still has that leather lunged voice of his. It is very sad about his accident and the death of his only son. Sad.

Last Friday night and went to see Simon and Garfunkel, great concert. I was amazed that Artie could still hit some of those high notes. Paul still has it too. One unintentional funny part was when Paul sang on verse of "Bridge over Troubled Water". He kept waving his arms and hands every which way, looked like a belly dancer and he heard the chuckles. When we was done, he ran back for his guitar even though he didn't play it.

Great fun, let's hear it for all the old guys.

Lol... my late cat, Maurice-Eley had the same cheeks and eyes as Crosby too (yes, I got comments on THAT).

Ah, Henry Diltz. One of the great rock photographers but did you know ...

He was also a banjo player. Played behind quite a number of acts, including America, John Stewart, Dan Fogelberg, and the Monkees. I remember quite a few album credits in the early - mid 70's.

I am currently reading 'Long Time Gone', David Crosby's autobiography. I'm about a third of the way through it, very interesting reading so far.

first time I saw Young was in a recording studio in memphis in 1975. Me and a buddy were doing "ol man".

turned around & there was Young....blew me away...
he was grinning...that epileptic grin....shook his hand and he said we did a good job with his tune.

Saw him again in concert in 1993 in the fall in Manchester NH....very small venue...great crisp weather and crisp sound. He did "gold rush" on an old pipe organ.

very good song writer (lyrics & music)

Isn't it interesting how our musical perceptions may be so easily changed by non-musical events. Many years ago I saw a very drunk Graham Nash jump off the stage to start a fight with someone in the audience. After a brief hiatus to clean everything up, the show continued as Crosby & Stills (without Nash). I can appreciate their musical talents, but I've always thought a lot less of Graham Nash, personally, after that.

Well, this happens in all fields of work. Sometimes it's fun for the performers but usually the audience knows and it creates a bad vibe. I have in mind a Roches concert I saw in the late 70's. I love their music, but they couldn't getting it together. I think it was Mimi Farini's fault, she was the headliner.

My tendentious two cents: this band possessed brilliant and epoch-shaping talent, but so often failed to deliver live. And for at least David Crosby, spare us the lecture on peace, love, etc. until you learn to travel without sidearms and other assorted weaponry.

Before anyone flames me, please do understand that I love these guys and have spent many, many hours on the guitar and vocal parts for their tunes. Being a fan of the sea and ships, Southern Cross is a fave.

I dunno...Paul maybe I just got lucky and saw a good show. Sound was excellent (actually they tweaked it a bit during the first tune, which was Carry On). No fights, no speeches... a little sucking on the O2 hose between sets I'm sure.

Interesting side note... my wife was with me at the show, and before the show we got in a conversation with some kids (who were with their dad) sitting behind us. My wife saw CS&N&Y when they played in Buffalo...like 1972ish? (dont kill me on the date). The year doesn't matter much anyway.. we asked the kids how old they were - ages 13,14, and 15 respectively. We got to tell 'em that my wife saw the group before any of them were even BORN.

To which they replied - jeeeze your old, you must be hippies.

Sigh.

my nephew is a buffalo springfield fan. He is 14.

He thinks it is "cool" that I know so much about the "classic rock" that he loves.

I think it is ironic that I know more about contemporary music than he does.

I suspect the band is better without ... er... medication other than Rx. Maturity can make a lot of difference even if we can't hit all the notes we once did.

I remember seeing BF on Ed Sullivan their first time. I had the record the next day, and started learning most of the tunes. They were very cool to me.

"For What It's Worth" was sampled not too long ago and used in a hip/hop song that got a lot of play. That might account for more kids knowing about BF.

Hi Cliff,
Along with my "crappy $100" guitar, one of the other items that I inherited and hope to sell was a print by Diltz that looks exactly like the one you described. Gotcha! ;-)

The last time I saw CSN wash with Neil Young at Madison Square Garden back in 2002. I can honestly say that it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Not only were the harmonies dead on, but Young and Stills lead guitar were incredible. I'm looking forward to seeing them in August as well. It's true that they may have lost something over the years, but CSN at 80% are still 10 times better than most of the crap that's around today.

Most of the groups that I like are now in their 50's and 60's which just means that I'm getting old! I just saw Bowie back in June and he put on a great show at 58 years of age. He has since had to have an angioplasty (sp?) but you would have never known it by the show that I saw.
