Location: Monroe, Ohio (Cincinnati) | At the risk of offending someone who owns one, has anyone played that Fender plastic back acoustic electric guitar that has the shape of a Telecaster.
I talked to a guy at the Sam Ash store that said he had one and he liked it, and maybe I'm just a hopeless idiot about guitars, but I thought that was one sorry guitar.
If I am in error here, maybe someone can educate me and lesson my idiocy.

Mark, I agree with you. If someone disagrees, I'd like to hear why they like it. The only saving grace that I can see of it is that it IS a guitar, and playing a guitar is almost always better than NOT.

Location: Kent, England | Yeah they're awful. Designed for electric guitar players who want to do the odd accoustic song in their set. When I was working out in Montenegro I look at them with a view to using it as a "travel" guitar as I didn't want to trust JAT airways with my O.
Now I've also got a Fender Strat which I love, but having played the Strataccoustic once...never again. In the end I decided to drive to Montenegro so I could take my O with me! There is no unplugged sound...very thin.
It's not an O!

Just remember, there are the Telecoustic and Stratacoustic, which are plastic pieces of...uh....er, guitar workmanship. Then there's the Acoustasonic Stratocaster (which my local mom and pop has). It's heftier than the Stratacoustic, having an alder body with graphite top. But, it sounds horrible unplugged, IM!HO. I didn't bother trying it amplified.

Seriously guys, horses for courses and all that; they are made to be plugged in and that's how they should really be judged.
My view?. For the money, nothing special but not bad either and if you love Fenders, then why not? |

They are a youthful starting ground when you see the other kids getting all the... attention and you can barely afford the guitar not to mention an Amp. Now you don't need the amp, you have visibility as a guitar player and a National Icon of a name on the headstock. You've embraced Rock (Rawk) with little or no parental involvement and you've started the decent.
They are mass-market crap.
That's why responsible parenting involves buying your kid their first Ovation (or instrument of choice)and guiding them in their musical journey. Get them to play "with" you and not against you.

But, you're right, if the idea is to have something that *looks* like an acoustic version of an electric that's played electrically and not acoustically, the [Tele|Strata]coustics fit the bill!!

Anyway, about your post...my oldest son (14) announced he wanted to learn to play geetar. He's working away on my (vintage!) Peavey Predator. I won't let him plug it in, though, and make him tune it every time he picks it up (well, when I'm around). He's worked through half of the Guitar Method I book. I promised to let him play through the 'big amp' when he gets to the end of the book and can play everything in it from memory. :) We have fun playing...
The 'big amp' is an old, old (but mint!) Peavey Centurion Mk. III bass head...150W or something like that, going into a 17" E-V in a custom enclosure...very, uh, loud. He's geeked thinking about his reward...I showed him how one can't get far enough away with a 20' coil cord to turn it up past 3 (well, 3.5). Figured I'd get his appetite going... |
